CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Ford Mustang
overall

Summary
With 1,777 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,493, 30.1% of 2017 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Ford Mustang 4.42 / 5 stars.
56.9% of 2017 Mustang models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford Mustang stands out because it combines the Mustang’s long-running performance heritage with a broad range of body styles and engines. It is part of the sixth generation, which was revealed in late 2013 and began production in the summer of 2014 for the 2015 model year. That redesign brought a sleeker, smoother look, kept the coupe and soft-top convertible body styles, and added a new electric system for opening and closing the convertible top. It also marked the first time Ford produced and marketed the Mustang for a global audience, and it was the first Mustang to feature Ford’s EcoBoost engine lineup.
For 2017, the Mustang’s appeal comes from its rear-wheel-drive layout and wide engine spread. Base cars use Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine, while other available engines include a 3.7-liter V6, the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, and two versions of the 5.2-liter V8. Transmission choices include two six-speed manuals, six- and 10-speed automatics, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That variety helps explain why the Mustang remains attractive to buyers who want a car that can be tailored toward everyday use or more serious performance.
There are also some drawbacks to keep in mind. Models with the EcoBoost engine are known for problems with oil consumption and potential head gasket failure, and the transmission may be prone to slippage. The Mustang also has a small rear seat, which limits practicality. Even so, the 2017 Ford Mustang remains distinctive for offering iconic styling, strong performance potential, and a wide range of configurations in a single, recognizable package.

Car had nice features and low mileage. The color and wheels weren't my favorite, but that's a personal preference. The price seemed a bit high (I see now they just increased it!), but a nice car overall.

The blower motor needs replacing. The check engine light was on. Felt like it was misfiring when you punch it. Last oil change sticker read last year. Afraid of deeper engine issues.

How much does the 2017 Ford Mustang cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,454 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,070 |
| Year-Round High | $22,463 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,465 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.50% |
Prices have softened 4.50% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,766 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and conditions.
Is the 2017 Ford Mustang a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Ford Mustang earns a 4.42/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, fun driving experience, and stylish design, and many like the range of engine choices that let you tailor the car toward everyday driving or more serious speed. For you, that means this model year makes the most sense if you want a recognizable sports car with broad appeal rather than a purely practical commuter. With 30.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.42/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback highlights the Mustang as dependable in the ways that matter most to enthusiasts: strong performance, enjoyable driving, and a car that many owners feel good about keeping over time. The same reviews also point to a few recurring frustrations, including the cramped backseat and outdated infotainment system, so your ownership experience may depend on how much you value comfort and tech versus driving character. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure you choose a well-kept example, since condition and maintenance history matter more when you’re shopping a performance-oriented car.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Mustang?
At 56.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of the body, drivetrain, and interior condition, since a sporty car can hide wear that matters later. Pay close attention to how the car drives and whether everything feels consistent, because condition is often the best clue to how the car was treated.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,766 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.50% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,070, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $21,454 sits slightly below last year's $22,465.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. If you’re thinking ahead to future trade-in value, the current softness means condition, mileage, and trim choice will matter even more when it’s time to sell. A well-kept example should still hold attention from shoppers who want a performance car with broad appeal.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.42/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.50% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.42/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $19,468, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $21,454 average.
- It adds heritage touches and modern convenience.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $22,543, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $21,454 average.
- It feels more refined and more performance-focused.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, owner satisfaction, and shopping flexibility, the 2017 is the primary path to consider. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is the better secondary option because it costs less while still delivering the Mustang formula. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer-feeling experience, the 2018 is worth a look.
