What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty?

At 66.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of the truck’s body, towing-related hardware, and interior controls. Because this model is often used for demanding work, condition matters as much as mileage, especially if you plan to tow or haul regularly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from XL to XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum. The base XL is the most work-focused, while higher trims add more comfort and upscale equipment; the Platinum stands out with a remote tailgate release, unique leather seating design, navigation, and adaptive steering.
• Powertrain: You can choose between a 6.2-liter gas V8 and a 6.7-liter PowerStroke turbodiesel V8. The gas engine makes 385 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, while the diesel delivers 440 hp and 925 pound-feet of torque for maximum towing strength.
• Safety package: The truck includes massive compound mirrors, a 360-degree camera system, a front camera, a full complement of airbags, traction control, and an SOS post-crash alert system. The camera setup is especially helpful for parking and trailering.
• Infotainment: SYNC 3 is the main interface, with Bluetooth smartphone pairing, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto support. The system is described as easy to use, with clear fonts and a sensible menu layout.
• Fuel efficiency: In mixed driving, the diesel returned 15.9 miles per gallon, and you can expect roughly 15 miles per gallon even in typical use.

Which 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty trim should I buy?

The 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty is offered in 5 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the most basic work-truck choice, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the Super Duty lineup and care more about capability than comfort.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for most buyers because it adds more everyday usability while staying closer to the truck’s core work mission.
• Lariat: Choose this if you want a stronger mix of comfort and equipment without jumping all the way to the luxury-focused upper trims.
• King Ranch: This trim suits you if you want a more upscale heavy-duty truck with a stronger emphasis on comfort and presentation.
• Platinum: This is the top luxury pick, with remote tailgate release, unique leather seating design, navigation, and adaptive steering for buyers who want the most upscale Super Duty experience.

The safety package centers on the truck’s mirrors, cameras, airbags, traction control, and SOS post-crash alert system, and those features help make even a large truck easier to live with.

What is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty's resale value?

The current average of $33,361 sits slightly below last year's $34,851.

That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future resale gains may be limited unless you choose a well-kept truck with desirable equipment. For a seller, the current pricing trend points to steady demand rather than a rapidly appreciating asset.

Trucks with strong capability and broad buyer appeal tend to hold attention better than niche vehicles, especially when they’re configured for towing or work use. A clean history and strong condition should matter a lot if you want to protect value later.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty safe?

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The truck’s safety equipment includes massive compound mirrors, a 360-degree camera system, a front camera for tight parking situations, a full complement of airbags, traction control, and an SOS post-crash alert system. Those features are especially useful in a truck this large, where visibility and maneuvering matter a lot.

The camera system is a major advantage when you’re trailering or parking, and the mirrors help reduce blind spots around the truck and trailer. The available safety tech is practical rather than flashy, but it fits the Super Duty’s job-first mission well.

Should I buy a 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty or consider a different year?

• The 2017 stands out as the first year of the all-new Super Duty redesign, with stronger tech integration and serious towing capability.

The bottom line: If you want the newest-feeling version of this generation and value the combination of capability and modern tech, the 2017 is a strong choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained truck you can find.

How does the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty compare to the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD?

The Ford stands out for its stronger tech integration and best-in-class torque, while the Chevrolet edges it on average used price and accident-free share.
