Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford Edge stands out as a well-sized crossover that sits between the smaller Ford Escape and the larger Explorer and Flex. It offers seating for five passengers, ample cargo room, and storage cubbies galore, making it a practical choice for busy families. It also has a manageable size and attractive styling, which helps it feel easy to live with rather than oversized or cumbersome.
What the Edge does not try to be is just as important: it does not pretend to be a weekend off-road warrior. The styling is sleek and attractive, though not especially dramatic or eye-catching, so its appeal is more about balance than flash. For buyers who want a family-friendly crossover with useful space and a comfortable, straightforward personality, the 2017 Ford Edge makes a strong case.

This car is a great car for someone who lives in a winter climate. It has great clearance and with snow tires can easily go through a foot of snow with the all-wheel-drive model with no worries! I like that has space for my kids and my stuff. I like that it’s comfortable and it’s not too big. I like that it’s easy on gas!

| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,338 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.16% |

Is the 2017 Ford Edge a good car?
Generally — 4.43/5 from owners and 7.5/10 from experts. The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Form and function, and Safety.
You’re looking at a crossover that’s positioned as a practical middle ground: it seats five, offers ample cargo room, and keeps a manageable footprint for everyday use. User feedback repeatedly points to strong performance, a spacious interior, comfort, and a smooth ride, while the overview emphasizes its family-friendly layout and easy-to-live-with size.
That combination makes it a strong fit if you want a useful daily driver rather than something flashy or oversized. The market also shows 30.9% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Ford Edge reliable?
Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback describes it as reliable and trouble-free for many owners, with several noting that it offers a lot for the price. The expert drive notes a composed, responsive ride and a transmission that shifts well, which supports the sense that it’s built for steady everyday use. The cost-effectiveness commentary also points out that the base model is attractively priced, though the lower trims are more limited in technology and safety equipment.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some owners reported engine issues and early mechanical problems, so a careful inspection matters.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Edge?
At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lower asking price. Focus on condition, prior repairs, and whether the equipment you want is actually present, since trim differences are meaningful on this model. If you’re shopping the base version, pay close attention to feature gaps and make sure the tradeoff still works for your needs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Edge SE comes with cloth seats, a 4.2-inch LCD screen, and a reversing camera, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience features. The SEL brings available heated power seats, dual-zone climate control, a touchscreen with navigation, remote start, a hands-free liftgate, and blind-spot warning with cross-traffic alert. The Titanium adds leather-trimmed heated seats, driver’s-seat memory, Sync 3, two USB ports, and a 12-speaker Sony audio system.
- Powertrain: The base model uses a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder with 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque, while the SEL and Titanium can be equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 with 280 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. The Sport uses a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 with 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, and the lineup uses a 6-speed automatic transmission.
- Safety package: Available features include lane-keep assist, a 180-degree front camera with washer, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, and forward-collision warning. These features are not standard on the base model, so higher trims are the better place to shop if safety tech matters to you.
- Infotainment: The base system uses a 4.2-inch color LCD screen with voice recognition and a single USB port. Sync 3 upgrades you to an 8-inch touchscreen with two USB ports, and it also adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The Sport is rated at 17 mpg city/24 highway, while the base engine with FWD is rated at 21 mpg city/29 highway.
Which 2017 Ford Edge trim should I buy?
The 2017 Ford Edge is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, SEL, Titanium, Sport.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Edge experience at the lowest starting price. You get the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, a 6-speed automatic, cloth seating, a reversing camera, and the basic Sync system. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it’s the most limited on tech and convenience.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a lot of everyday usability without jumping all the way to the top of the range. You can get the available V6, plus dual-zone climate control, a touchscreen with navigation, remote start, a hands-free liftgate, and blind-spot warning with cross-traffic alert.
- Titanium: This is the comfort-and-tech upgrade. It adds leather-trimmed heated seats, driver’s-seat memory, Sync 3, two USB ports, and a 12-speaker Sony audio system, making it the right pick if you want a more upscale cabin.
- Sport: This is the performance-focused choice, with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, standard AWD, adaptive steering, a sport-tuned suspension, and 20-inch wheels. It’s the one to choose if driving enjoyment matters more than fuel economy.
Higher trims are where you’ll find the more complete safety and convenience equipment, since many of those features are not standard on the base model.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford Edge?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,866 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.16% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,249, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Ford Edge's resale value?
The current average of $12,249 sits slightly below last year's $13,338.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Edge easier to buy now but may also limit near-term upside for a future seller. If you plan to own it for a while, the current pricing gives you a lower entry point, but resale will still depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment level. Well-kept examples with desirable features should remain easier to move than rougher, lower-equipped ones.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Ford Edge safe?
The 2017 Ford Edge earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with a four-star rating for rollover resistance. The IIHS rated it Good in all crash tests except small front overlap, where it received an Acceptable rating.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Edge offers available lane-keep assist, a 180-degree front camera with washer, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, and forward-collision warning. Multiple airbags are standard, and inflatable rear safety belts are available. If you want the fuller safety suite, you’ll need to move up from the base trim, since those features are tied to higher trims.
The main caveat is that it does not qualify for Top Safety Pick+ because it lacks front crash-mitigation technology, and the small front overlap result is weaker than the rest of its crash-test performance.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Edge or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.16% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It offers a practical family-friendly layout with seating for five, ample cargo room, and a manageable size.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $11,310, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $12,249 average.
- It emphasizes a performance-focused Sport identity with a standard twin-turbocharged V6 engine.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced buy, the 2017 is the stronger all-around choice because it combines a lower current average price, solid owner satisfaction, and broad practicality. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the more price-sensitive path, especially if you’re drawn to its performance-oriented character.
