Is the 2017 Dodge Charger a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Dodge Charger earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.3/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, stylish design, and thrilling driving experience. The Charger also comes through as a car you can enjoy every day, with a smooth ride and a strong sense of personality. If you want a bold four-door with enthusiast appeal rather than something discreet, that use case fits this model year well.

With 26.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to find a compelling value if you shop carefully.

Is the 2017 Dodge Charger reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free enough to inspire confidence over time, especially when you factor in the strong enthusiasm around its performance and design. The expert notes also frame it as a car that can be a bargain for what it delivers, even if ownership costs can rise with fuel, tires, brakes, and insurance.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a performance-focused Charger can be more expensive to keep in top shape than a more ordinary sedan.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Charger?

At 48% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven hard. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of wear that can come with a performance-oriented sedan. If a listing looks unusually cheap, make sure the savings are not hiding accident damage or deferred upkeep.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Charger Daytona treatment adds SRT-derived design details, a cold-air induction system with a functional hood scoop, heritage-inspired graphics, a Satin Black roof and rear spoiler treatment, wider 20-inch aluminum wheels, and interior upgrades. The base car’s standard reversing camera is helpful, but some advanced driver aids are optional rather than standard.
• Powertrain: A 6.4-liter V8 with 485 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque sends power to the rear wheels through an 8-speed automatic. The setup is tuned for serious acceleration and track-ready performance, but it also brings higher fuel and ownership costs.
• Safety package: The Charger includes a reversing camera as standard equipment, and optional features include adaptive cruise control with full-stop capability, full-speed forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The Charger uses an 8.4-inch Uconnect system with upgraded graphics, quick response, pinch-and-swipe controls, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a free 6-month Uconnect Access trial.
• Fuel efficiency: The 6.4-liter V8 is EPA-rated at 15 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.

Which 2017 Dodge Charger trim should I buy?

The 2017 Dodge Charger is offered in 2 trim levels: R/T and R/T Scat Pack.

Here's the short version:

• R/T: This is the lower-priced path into the Daytona treatment, and it gives you the core Charger personality with the special styling and performance character that define the model.
• R/T Scat Pack: This is the best-value trim if you want the stronger performance setup and the more serious enthusiast focus that the Daytona package is built around.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that the reversing camera is standard, while several driver-assistance features remain optional.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Charger?

The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with patience and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,127 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 48.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,188, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Dodge Charger's resale value?

The current average of $18,064 sits slightly above last year's $17,949.

That kind of stability suggests the Charger is holding its value reasonably well rather than swinging sharply up or down. For a future seller, that can be a positive sign because a steady market usually makes pricing easier and reduces the risk of a sudden drop in demand. The model’s strong enthusiast appeal also helps support interest from buyers who want a distinctive four-door performance sedan.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Dodge Charger safe?

The Charger earns high marks for crashworthiness and collision avoidance from IIHS, though it also receives a Marginal rating in the small offset frontal-impact test.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Charger includes a reversing camera as standard equipment, and 911 Call is available through Uconnect Access for emergency assistance. Optional driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with full-stop capability, full-speed forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

The main caveat is that the IIHS small offset frontal result is weaker than the rest of its crashworthiness profile, so you should weigh that carefully if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Charger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 48% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds a next-generation Uconnect system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $15,941, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $18,064 average.
• It offers a more understated take on the Charger with strong value and satisfying family-sedan appeal.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $18,952, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $18,064 average.
• It adds the latest infotainment and safety tech, plus available all-wheel drive.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price stability, modern tech, and enthusiast appeal, the 2017 is the primary path to consider. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is the better value play, while the 2018 makes sense if you want the newer-tech upgrade and are willing to pay more.
