What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?

At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with optional equipment. Pay close attention to body condition, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair, since accident history can affect both value and long-term ownership confidence.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GT adds all-wheel drive, while the cabin mixes retro gauges with modern screens and controls; base trims are less equipped.
• Powertrain: The GT uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 horsepower and an 8-speed automatic, and it emphasizes smooth cruising more than excitement.
• Safety package: The usual airbags are in place, and available driver assists include lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert; a reversing camera is standard.
• Infotainment: The Uconnect 8.4 system includes navigation, real-time traffic, weather alerts, and onboard apps.
• Fuel efficiency: The GT is rated at 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

Which 2017 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?

The 2017 Dodge Challenger is offered in 14 trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, R/T Shaker, R/T Scat Pack, R/T Scat Pack Shaker, T/A, T/A 392, SRT 392, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Widebody, SRT Demon, and other trims referenced in the model-year lineup.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the entry point if you want the Challenger’s style and size at the lowest starting price, but it’s the least compelling choice if you want the strongest feature set.
• GT: This is the best-value trim if you want the broadest everyday appeal, because it adds all-wheel drive, the 3.6-liter V6, and a strong mix of comfort and tech features.
• R/T: Step up here if you want more muscle-car character and are willing to trade some efficiency-focused practicality for stronger performance.
• R/T Scat Pack: This is the better pick if you want a more serious performance feel without jumping all the way to the highest-priced trims.
• SRT 392: Choose this if you want a more aggressive performance setup and are shopping for a higher-end Challenger experience.
• SRT Hellcat: This is the extreme choice for buyers who want the most power and the most dramatic personality.

The safety package note is important: many driver-assist features are optional, so you should verify exactly which aids are fitted on any used example.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,413 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.47% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $20,184, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Dodge Challenger's resale value?

The current average of $20,550 sits slightly below last year's $21,289.

That decline suggests the market has softened, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. If you’re a future seller, condition and equipment will matter more because the broader price trend is already moving downward.

Well-kept examples with desirable features should still draw attention, especially because the Challenger’s strong owner satisfaction helps support demand. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger safe?

The 2017 Dodge Challenger got the highest 5-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and it scored 4 stars in the frontal crash rating.

It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety content also notes that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it the highest Good rating only in the moderate front overlap and side crash tests, while it scored Marginal on the small front overlap test and Acceptable on the roof strength and headrest/seat tests. The body structure was deemed Poor in the small front overlap test, which is a meaningful caveat if you’re comparing used coupes.

The usual airbags are in place, and many driver-assist features are optional, including lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert. A reversing camera is standard, but you should confirm which optional safety aids are actually installed on any specific used car.

Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.47% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 adds AWD availability, which broadens its appeal for year-round use.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $23,906, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,550 average.
• The 2016 emphasizes authentic retro muscle-car identity with fresh options and a shaker hood.

The bottom line: If you want the better value and broader shopping pool, the 2017 is the stronger pick. If you’re focused on the older model’s specific styling cues and are willing to pay more for them, the 2016 can still make sense.

How does the 2017 Dodge Challenger compare to the 2017 Ford Mustang?

Our experts score the 2017 Dodge Challenger 7.5/10 and the 2017 Ford Mustang 7.8/10.

The Challenger leans harder into retro style and offers a roomier, more relaxed personality, while the Mustang edges it on expert score and starts at a lower MSRP. The Challenger’s AWD option and slightly stronger city fuel economy give it a practical advantage for some buyers, but the Mustang has the edge in overall market availability and deal share.
