What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Cruze?

At 51.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible cosmetic wear. Focus on how the car drives over bumps, how the cabin functions day to day, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re looking at. Because the Cruze was offered with different equipment levels, it’s worth confirming the exact feature set before you commit.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The hatchback is offered only in LT and Premier trims, and the lower trims leave out basic conveniences like cruise control. The LT adds 16-inch alloys, a 6-speaker stereo with satellite radio, LED running lights, heated mirrors, and steering-wheel controls, while the Premier adds leather, a heated steering wheel, 17-inch wheels, chrome accents, and rear suspension tuning that gives it a more polished feel.
• Powertrain: The Cruze uses a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine with 153 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. It feels adequate in city driving, but it is not especially strong for highway passing or hill climbs, and the automatic is rated at 31 mpg combined, 28 city, and 37 highway.
• Safety package: Teen Driver is standard on every Cruze, and it lets you set speed and distance limits for a secondary driver while sending app-delivered reports and notifications. The LT can add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors, while the Premier needs the Driver Confidence II Package for forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams.
• Infotainment: Standard Chevy MyLink uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Navigation requires the Premier and the Sun and Sound with Navigation package, and wireless charging is available but can be awkward with larger phones.
• Fuel efficiency: The automatic is rated at 31 mpg combined, 28 city, and 37 highway, and the manual is said to offer a slight 1-mpg advantage.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Cruze trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze is offered in 2 trim levels: LT and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• LT: This is the better-value starting point if you want the Cruze hatchback without stretching too far on price. You get the core hatchback utility, the 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and useful everyday features like heated mirrors and steering-wheel controls. If you want the best balance of price and equipment, this is the trim to target.
• Premier: This is the more upscale choice if you want the Cruze to feel more complete right away. It adds leather, a heated steering wheel, 17-inch wheels, and the Convenience Package as standard, plus it can be optioned with more advanced driver-assistance and comfort features. It makes sense if you value a more premium cabin and are willing to pay more for it.

The LT can be fitted with the Driver Confidence Package, while the Premier needs the Driver Confidence II Package for its full safety-assist feature set.

• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.89% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $9,157, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze's resale value?

The current average of $9,157 sits slightly below last year's $9,731.

That softer pricing suggests the Cruze has already moved through a meaningful portion of its depreciation curve, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range and keep the car in good condition, you reduce the risk of taking a bigger hit later. Strong owner satisfaction also helps keep demand steady in the used market.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.35/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze safe?

The Cruze earns four-star ratings in all NHTSA tests except the frontal crash test, where it earns a five-star rating. It also earns Good ratings from IIHS in Moderate Overlap Front and Side Impact testing.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Teen Driver is standard across the lineup, and it lets you set speed and distance limits for a secondary driver while sending reports and notifications when limits are exceeded. The LT can add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors, while the Premier requires the Driver Confidence II Package for forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and intervention, plus auto high beams.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.89% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.35/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• Chevrolet added a sloping rear hatch to give the Cruze more utility and broaden its appeal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $8,096, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,157 average.
• It offers a fresh second-generation take on the Cruze nameplate.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $9,937, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $9,157 average.
• It adds diesel versions for buyers seeking a rarer compact-car option.

The bottom line: If you want the hatchback utility, standard Teen Driver mode, and a softer current price, the 2017 is the most balanced pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is the value play; if you want the later-year diesel option, the 2018 is the one to compare.
