Is the 2016 Volvo XC90 reliable?

The expert review also emphasizes that Volvo built this XC90 to be a secure, confidence-inspiring family SUV, and the ownership coverage includes 3 years/36,000 miles of factory scheduled maintenance. What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volvo XC90?

At 67.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lower asking price. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the cabin electronics and safety systems operate as intended. Because this is a premium SUV, you’ll want to make sure the equipment level matches the listing description and that wear items haven’t been neglected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Momentum is already well equipped, with standard safety features that include LED daytime running lights, a driver’s knee airbag, electronic stability control, seatbelt pretensioners, lane-departure warnings, road-sign information, roll stability control, collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection and avoidance, and driver alert. The Inscription adds more upscale touches such as power side bolsters, while the R-Design brings a performance-focused character.
• Powertrain: The XC90 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in T5 models, a more powerful turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter in T6 models, and a 400-hp hybrid option for buyers who want maximum efficiency. The T5 is the only front-wheel-drive choice, while the T6 and T8 are all-wheel drive only.
• Safety package: Standard driver-assistance features include collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection and avoidance, driver alert, lane-departure warnings, road-sign information, and roll stability control. Optional upgrades add blind-spot information with cross-traffic alerts, a 360-degree surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control with pilot assist, front park assist, lane-keeping aid, and park-assist pilot.
• Infotainment: The XC90 uses a 9-inch Sensus touchscreen, and it supports optional Apple CarPlay. The system is designed for easy swipe-and-tap use, and the display can be used with gloves on.
• Fuel efficiency: The XC90 is rated at 20 mpg city/25 highway, and the review notes that premium fuel is recommended.

Which 2016 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, Inscription, R-Design.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the best-value starting point because it already includes a long list of standard safety and convenience features, plus the upscale cabin materials that make the XC90 feel premium even at the entry level. If you want the core XC90 experience without stretching your budget, this is the trim to target.
• Inscription: Choose this if you want a more luxurious feel, including added interior refinement and features like power side bolsters. It suits you best if comfort and a richer cabin matter more than keeping the price down.
• R-Design: Pick this if you want the sportier-looking, performance-focused version of the XC90. It also gets paddle shifters and has its own climate package option, so it’s the trim to consider if you want the most distinctive character.

The safety equipment is strong across the lineup, but some advanced driver-assistance features remain optional rather than standard.

What is the 2016 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $13,851 sits slightly below last year's $15,863.

That price movement suggests the XC90 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you keep the vehicle in strong condition and maintain it well, you’ll be better positioned to recover value later. The current market also shows that shoppers still respond well to this model’s mix of safety, comfort, and luxury appeal.

Should I buy a 2016 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 37.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 67.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.68% compared with last year.

The bottom line: If you want the XC90’s original all-new design, strong safety reputation, and a market that currently favors careful shoppers, the 2016 is a sensible buy. If you’re price-sensitive and want to compare against a newer nearby year with more modern connectivity, it’s worth cross-shopping, but the 2016 still makes a strong case when you find a clean, well-priced example.
