Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Sienna stands out as a minivan that already offered an impressive suite of technology, with Siri Eyes Free adding voice activation for iPhone users. That feature gives the Sienna extra utility and a bit of added safety, making it especially appealing to drivers who want family-hauling practicality without giving up modern convenience.
Beyond that tech upgrade, the Sienna’s appeal comes from its long-running reputation as a leader in the minivan segment. The available owner feedback reinforces that image, pointing to comfort, spaciousness, and a wide variety of features as major strengths. Some drivers also praised the value and more upscale feel of the limited edition models, especially the sound system and interior design.
There are a couple of tradeoffs to keep in mind. Some owners noted that engine noise can be noticeable during acceleration, and getting in and out of the car seats may be challenging for some. Even so, the 2016 Toyota Sienna remains distinctive for combining family-friendly space with a strong feature set and a useful voice-control upgrade.

The features are great especially the right blind spot display. This car is a great value. The only thing missing is leather seats. I can’t compare it to any other models since this one is a special edition.

Reviewed a 2016 Toyota Sienna on Oct 14, 2020
We looked at the Honda and Toyota minivans. We ended up purchasing the Sienna. It is a great vehicle, great value, very comfortable. Prior to purchasing the vehicle the two negative reviews I found were the engine is loud when accelerating and the car seats are hard to get in and out. I did not even notice the engine noise so that is a non-issue for me but the car seats were a little tricky. We leave our car seats in for extended periods of time (only take out to clean) so its really not a big deal. If we took them out every day I could see how this would be annoying but the fact that they essentially live in the car I really dont care. All the extra features are really nice too, automatic doors with buttons on the key fob, build in sun screens, electronics are really nice and responsive, the interior space and head room is massive. We really enjoy this vehicle and will have it for a long time.

CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2016 Toyota Sienna prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2016 Toyota Sienna cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,409 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,192.39 |
| Year-Round High | $17,954.25 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,744 |

Prices have softened 1.89% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,058 listings available, which suggests you should have some room to compare prices and equipment.
If you find a listing below $16,192.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Yes — 5/5 from owners, and that lines up with an expert rating of 7.67/10. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise the Sienna for its comfort and spaciousness, and they also call out the value and luxury feel of the limited editions. The interior design and sound system come up as recurring positives, which fits a family-focused van that aims to make daily use easier.
The overview also points to a strong fit if you want a roomy, comfort-oriented minivan with useful tech and a smooth overall driving experience. With 30.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as comfortable, spacious, and a vehicle they can count on, while also praising the value and upscale feel of higher trims. The expert notes also emphasize reliability and high resale value, which supports the idea that this is a minivan built for long-term ownership.
The performance notes reinforce that dependability angle: every Sienna uses the same 3.5-liter V6 and 6-speed automatic, so you are not forced into a more complicated powertrain as you move up the range. The cost-effectiveness notes add that Toyota included a recall on front seatbelts for this model year, so a used example should be checked carefully for completed recall work and overall maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?
At 52% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the van has had bodywork or higher mileage. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the equipment you want is actually present, since this model year spans a wide range of trim content.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base L trim includes automatic headlights, windshield-wiper heaters, tri-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera in a 6.1-inch touchscreen, Siri Eyes Free, and 17-inch alloys. Higher trims add features such as heated side mirrors, power-sliding doors, a larger touchscreen, leather upholstery, a power liftgate, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear-seat entertainment, navigation, and premium audio.
- Powertrain: Every Sienna uses the same 3.5-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission. FWD versions are rated at 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for a combined 21 mpg, while AWD versions drop to 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway for a combined 19 mpg.
- Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning can be added through packages or options. Some features are not available on every configuration, and the Advanced Technology package is not offered on AWD Siennas.
- Infotainment: Base models use a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while higher trims move to a 7.0-inch screen and enhanced connectivity. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD versions return 18 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, while AWD versions return 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.
Which 2016 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, SE, SE Premium, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The L trim gives you the essentials, but it skips the more upscale touches and advanced driver-assistance content found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The LE is the best value if you want a meaningful upgrade, adding power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, a larger touchscreen, upgraded audio, and smartphone-based navigation support.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most luxurious choice, with premium leather, a heated steering wheel, navigation, parking sensors, a JBL audio system, and other upscale touches.
- Off-road trim: The SE is the one to think twice about if you want the most comfort-oriented daily driver, since its stiffer sport suspension changes the ride character.
The safety-package note to keep in mind is that blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning are available only on certain trims or through packages.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,058 listings available.

- Clean inventory: 52.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,192.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $17,409 sits slightly below last year's $17,744.
That modest decline suggests the market has softened a bit, but not enough to undermine the Sienna's long-term appeal. For a future seller, that means you should still expect solid demand if you keep the van clean, well maintained, and properly documented.
The model's strong owner satisfaction and family-friendly reputation should help support buyer interest over time. Higher-trim examples with desirable equipment may also hold attention better than stripped-down versions.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna safe?
Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have awarded their top scores overall for the Sienna, with only the NHTSA’s total frontal crash and the IIHS’s small overlap frontal-crash tests receiving the second-highest ratings.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety equipment includes traction and stability control, a full suite of airbags including driver’s knee and curtain-length coverage, plus available blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. If you are shopping used, pay close attention to whether those driver-assistance features are actually present, since some are tied to packages or higher trims.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.89% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 keeps the Sienna's roomy, comfort-first family focus while adding useful tech and strong resale appeal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $15,138, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,409 average.
- It stands out for major upgrades in safety and handling.
The bottom line: If you want the newer market position, the 2016 is the better all-around pick because it combines strong owner satisfaction, solid safety, and a still-reasonable price trend. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the smarter value play and still delivers many of the same core strengths.
