Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna a good car?

Drivers consistently praise its comfort, spaciousness, and feature content, and they also highlight the value and luxury feel of the Limited models. The Sienna’s family-focused setup fits buyers who want a practical minivan with a strong convenience story, especially if you care about cabin usability and tech features. Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Drivers describe it as comfortable, spacious, and valuable, and the feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers. The expert evaluation also notes that the Sienna has historically been a class leader for reliability, even if the 2016 model shows a slight dip versus that reputation. Toyota’s maintenance and ownership story is helped by the fact that the Sienna remains a strong value proposition over time.

There was one recall on front seatbelts for the 2016 model, so used buyers should verify repair history and look closely at long-term maintenance records.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?

At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, safety equipment, and interior wear. Because this model is often bought for family duty, condition matters as much as mileage, especially if you want a clean example with fewer surprises. Pay extra attention to how the cabin, doors, and electronics function in daily use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base L trim already includes automatic headlights, windshield-wiper heaters, tri-zone automatic climate control, a rear-view camera, Siri Eyes Free, and 17-inch alloys, while the LE adds heated side mirrors, power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, an upgraded stereo, a 7-inch touchscreen, privacy glass, and app-based navigation support. The SE adds a sport suspension, tighter steering, 19-inch wheels, a power liftgate, leather upholstery and steering wheel, heated front seats, and sporty exterior details, while the XLE and Limited move further up the comfort and luxury ladder.
• Powertrain: Every Sienna uses the same 3.5-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission, so you are choosing trim and equipment rather than a different engine. The setup delivers 266 hp and 245 lb-ft of torque, with 18 mpg city and 25 highway for FWD versions and 16/23 for AWD versions.
• Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning are available through packages or standalone options, and the Advanced Technology package is offered on FWD Siennas. Base trims do not get the full suite of advanced driver aids as standard.
• Infotainment: Base models use a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while higher trims move to a 7-inch screen and add enhanced connectivity. Rear-seat entertainment with Driver Easy Speak is a standout feature, and navigation is available on upper trims.
• Fuel efficiency: FWD versions are rated at 18 mpg city and 25 highway, while AWD versions are rated at 16 mpg city and 23 highway.

Which 2016 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Sienna is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, SE, XLE, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the value play if you want the essentials without paying for extras, since it already includes a rear-view camera, tri-zone climate control, Siri Eyes Free, and a long list of standard convenience features.
• LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds power-sliding doors, an upgraded stereo, a larger touchscreen, heated mirrors, and app-based navigation support without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• SE: Choose this if you want the firmer sport suspension, more aggressive styling, and extra comfort features like leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power liftgate.
• XLE: This trim is for you if you want a more comfort-oriented setup with added convenience and a less sporty feel than the SE.
• Limited: This is the luxury pick, with premium leather, navigation, a JBL audio system, parking sensors, and a more upscale overall presentation.

The safety-package note to keep in mind is that blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning are not uniformly standard across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,450 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.06% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 55.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,192, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Sienna's resale value?

The current average of $17,537 sits slightly above last year's $17,182.

That upward move suggests the Sienna has held demand well enough to support pricing, even as the market shifts. For a future seller, that means a clean, well-kept example should remain appealing if you can document maintenance and avoid accident history. The model’s family-friendly reputation and strong feature content also help it stay relevant with used buyers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna safe?

The 2016 Toyota Sienna earns top overall scores from both NHTSA and IIHS, though NHTSA’s total frontal crash result and IIHS’s small overlap frontal-crash test were the second-highest ratings.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The available safety equipment includes traction and stability control, a full airbag suite with driver’s knee and curtain-length airbags, and optional blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. The expert review also notes that the Sienna’s stopping distance is solid for the class. One caveat is that the frontal-crash result and small-overlap result were not the very top marks, so you should still pay attention to trim and option content when comparing used examples.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.06% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for its strong technology story, including Siri Eyes Free and a broad family-focused feature set.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $15,235, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,537 average.
• The 2015 is described as a notably improved, more complete version of the Sienna with major safety progress.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of features, satisfaction, and inventory, the 2016 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly path and still brings meaningful improvements.

How does the 2016 Toyota Sienna compare to the 2016 Honda Odyssey?

Our experts score the 2016 Toyota Sienna 7.7/10 and the 2016 Honda Odyssey 8.2/10.

The Odyssey earns the higher expert score, but the Sienna offers a stronger average used price and a slightly better good-and-great deal share. The Sienna also brings more horsepower, while the Odyssey returns better fuel economy and a lower average used price. If you want the stronger value story and more power, the Sienna makes sense; if you want the better overall expert score and efficiency, the Odyssey has the edge.
