Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Sienna stands out as a family-focused minivan that pairs practicality with a strong technology story. Its most distinctive update is Siri Eyes Free, which brings voice activation to the Sienna for iPhone users and adds another layer of utility and safety. That fits a vehicle already described as having an impressive suite of tech, and it helps explain why the Sienna has long been a leader in the minivan segment.
Beyond the tech angle, the Sienna’s appeal comes from its reputation for giving buyers a lot for their money in a highly competitive class. It has also been a top-selling U.S. minivan off and on for more than 15 years, which reinforces its broad family appeal. Owner feedback lines up with that image, with praise for comfort, spaciousness, and the variety of features, along with appreciation for the value and luxury feel of the limited edition models.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. Some drivers note that engine noise can be noticeable during acceleration, and getting in and out of the car seats may be challenging for some. Even so, the 2016 Toyota Sienna remains distinctive for buyers who want a roomy, well-equipped minivan with a useful voice-control upgrade.

The features are great especially the right blind spot display. This car is a great value. The only thing missing is leather seats. I can’t compare it to any other models since this one is a special edition.

Reviewed a 2016 Toyota Sienna on Oct 14, 2020
We looked at the Honda and Toyota minivans. We ended up purchasing the Sienna. It is a great vehicle, great value, very comfortable. Prior to purchasing the vehicle the two negative reviews I found were the engine is loud when accelerating and the car seats are hard to get in and out. I did not even notice the engine noise so that is a non-issue for me but the car seats were a little tricky. We leave our car seats in for extended periods of time (only take out to clean) so its really not a big deal. If we took them out every day I could see how this would be annoying but the fact that they essentially live in the car I really dont care. All the extra features are really nice too, automatic doors with buttons on the key fob, build in sun screens, electronics are really nice and responsive, the interior space and head room is massive. We really enjoy this vehicle and will have it for a long time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Toyota Sienna earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its comfort, spaciousness, and the variety of features it offers. The user feedback also highlights the value and luxury feel of the limited edition models, along with the sound system and interior design.
That lines up with the Sienna’s family-focused mission: you’re looking at a minivan built for everyday practicality, useful tech, and broad appeal. 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there’s still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, spaciousness, and a strong feature set as recurring strengths, and it also reflects the model’s reputation for being dependable over the long haul. The expert evaluation likewise describes the Sienna as a class leader historically for reliability, even while noting a slight recent dip.
The expert assessment also emphasizes that the Sienna is built to be a practical, family-ready minivan with a strong ownership reputation. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure a specific example has been maintained well and doesn’t carry unresolved recall or wear-related issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?
At 53.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage or heavily optioned example. Focus on condition details that matter in a family minivan: interior wear, seat operation, electronics, and evidence of past bodywork or repairs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base L trim includes automatic headlights, windshield-wiper heaters, tri-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera in a 6.1-inch touchscreen, Siri Eyes Free, and 17-inch alloys. The LE adds heated side mirrors, power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, an upgraded stereo with HD and satellite radio, a 7-inch touchscreen, privacy glass, body-color trim, easy-clean fabric, and Scout GPS Link app compatibility.
- Powertrain: Every Sienna uses a 3.5-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Output is 266 hp and 245 lb-ft of torque, with FWD versions rated at 18 mpg city/25 highway and 21 mpg combined; AWD versions drop to 16/23 and 19 combined.
- Safety package: The available driver-assistance equipment includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive radar cruise, and forward-collision warning. The Advanced Technology package is available for FWD Siennas, and the AWD versions do not get that package.
- Infotainment: Base models use a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while higher trims move to a 7.0-inch screen. The tech story also includes Siri Eyes Free, enhanced connectivity, and available rear-seat entertainment with Driver Easy Speak.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD versions are rated at 18 mpg city, 25 highway, and 21 combined, while AWD versions are rated at 16 city, 23 highway, and 19 combined.
Which 2016 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, SE, SE Premium, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the value-oriented starting point, but it still comes with a long list of useful features, including Siri Eyes Free, a rear-view camera, tri-zone climate control, and 17-inch alloys. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and don’t need many extras.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds power-sliding doors, an upgraded stereo, a larger touchscreen, and more convenience features without jumping into the pricier sport or luxury trims.
- SE: This trim is for you if you want a firmer suspension, tighter steering, 19-inch wheels, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a more distinctive appearance. It’s the one to consider if you want the most road feel.
- SE Premium: This adds the rear-seat entertainment system, navigation, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a sunroof, and enhanced smartphone integration. It suits families that want more comfort and tech.
- XLE: This trim trades away the SE’s sportier setup for a more traditional comfort focus, while adding features like keyless entry and ignition, a power passenger seat, and power rear quarter windows.
- Limited: This is the most upscale choice, with premium leather, navigation, a heated steering wheel, parking sensors, and a JBL audio system. It’s the right pick if you want the most luxury-oriented Sienna.
The safety package is strongest when you choose trims or packages that include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,231 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.22% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,191, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $17,546 sits slightly below last year's $17,762.
That modest decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more selectively now. For a future seller, the current pricing trend is still relatively stable rather than sharply weakening, so a well-kept example should remain reasonably marketable.
The Sienna’s strong owner satisfaction and family-friendly reputation should continue to support demand. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna safe?
The 2016 Toyota Sienna earns top overall crash-test recognition from both NHTSA and IIHS, though NHTSA’s total frontal crash result is the second-highest rating.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The available driver-assistance suite includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. The expert review also notes a full suite of airbags, including driver’s knee and curtain-length airbags.
One caveat is that the NHTSA frontal crash result is not the top score, even though the overall safety performance is strong. That makes it worth paying attention to the exact equipment on the specific trim you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 adds Siri Eyes Free, which improves voice control and convenience for iPhone users.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $15,489, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,546 average.
- It is viewed as a notably improved version of the minivan, with major progress in safety and overall appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market mix of price, inventory, and tech, the 2016 is the better primary target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the smarter price-sensitive alternative, especially if you find one in excellent condition.
