That kind of reputation matters for used buyers because it can reduce the odds of unpleasant surprises and help the SUV remain a confident long-term choice.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Highlander?

At 59.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with past damage. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has higher mileage or incomplete service records. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior repair quality, and whether the vehicle still feels tight, quiet, and well maintained on the road.

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.

• Inventory: There are 1,975 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.57% compared with last year.

What is the 2016 Toyota Highlander's resale value?

The current average of $18,010 sits slightly below last year's $18,678.

That softer pricing can help you buy more efficiently now, but it also suggests future resale gains may be more gradual than in a rising market. Even so, the Highlander's strong owner satisfaction and practical reputation should help it stay appealing to used buyers. Well-kept examples with clean history and desirable equipment are likely to hold demand better than average.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.57% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $19,955, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,010 average.
• It adds standard Safety Sense and refreshed styling.

The bottom line: The 2016 is the better value if you want a well-liked Highlander at a lower price, especially if you can verify a clean history and strong condition. If you want the newer safety and styling updates, the 2017 is the better upgrade path, but you'll pay more for it.
