CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Nissan Maxima
overall

Summary
With 38 currently listed for sale near Tampa, FL and an average price of $11,807.00, 13.2% of 2016 Nissan Maximas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Nissan Maxima 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
52.6% of 2016 Maxima models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Nissan Maxima stands out first and foremost for its styling. The test-drive notes make clear that if you do not like the way it looks, nothing else about it is likely to change your mind. For buyers who do like its design, that same appeal carries through to the rest of the car.
It is also presented as a car that is not really a “4-door sports car” in the traditional sense, despite that label sometimes being attached to it. The comparison in the source suggests that the Maxima does not fit that description as convincingly as some other performance-oriented sedans, but it still has enough visual appeal to make the overall package attractive. Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for its stylish design, comfort, handling, and spacious interior. The main caution is reliability, which some drivers have experienced as a significant drawback.

I love the car a lot and I would recommend a maxima to everyone. The features are great, especially the safety ones, my favorite one is the cooled seats. I love the interior. I don’t think it’s missing anything. To compare I like this models better then a lot of other brands and it doesn’t get better then this.

The expert review adds that the car’s dependability is a reasonable expectation, though the newer technologies are the main area that could affect future ratings. For used buyers, that means your biggest long-term risk is not the core drivetrain concept so much as how well the car’s electronics and prior maintenance have held up.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Nissan Maxima?
At 48.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or any warning-light history. Focus on overall condition, because the Maxima’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been maintained and whether its equipment still works as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SL adds predictive forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a dual-panel sunroof, a premium audio system, active noise cancellation, active sound enhancement, ambient cabin lighting, and a heated steering wheel. The SR is the sportier choice, with paddle shifters, a sport suspension, a front performance chassis damper, 19-inch wheels, and an Integrated Dynamics Module with Active Ride Control, Active Trace Control, and Active Engine Brake. The SL is the best-value trim if you want the strongest mix of comfort and safety equipment.
- Powertrain: The car uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 300 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission that uses dynamic step shifting and an adaptive shift controller. The review also notes that the lack of an optional torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system limits the car’s performance credibility.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes a reversing camera, NissanConnect Services safety features, and an Easy Fill Tire Alert system. Higher trims add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, a 360-degree monitoring system, predictive forward-collision warning, and forward emergency braking. Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist are not offered, and drowsy-driver detection is reserved for the Platinum trim.
- Infotainment: NissanConnect is standard, with navigation and NissanConnect Services. The system includes remote engine start, remote access to locks, lights, and horn, automatic collision notification, emergency calling, a stolen-vehicle locator, destination download capability, Google Send to Car, and a hands-free text-messaging assistant.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates are 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The expert test drive returned 21.8 mpg.
Which 2016 Nissan Maxima trim should I buy?
The 2016 Nissan Maxima is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, SL, SR, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Maxima’s styling and V6 power at the lowest price, but you give up the richer comfort and safety content found higher up the range.
- SV: This trim adds leather, heated front seats and side mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, and an 8-way power driver’s seat with thigh support extension, making it a stronger everyday choice than the S.
- SL: This is the best-value trim because it layers in predictive forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a dual-panel sunroof, premium audio, active noise cancellation, ambient cabin lighting, and a heated steering wheel.
- SR: Choose this if you want the sportiest setup, since it adds paddle shifters, a sport suspension, a front performance chassis damper, 19-inch wheels, and the Integrated Dynamics Module with Active Ride Control, Active Trace Control, and Active Engine Brake.
- Platinum: This is the top trim for buyers who want the most upscale experience, and it is the only one mentioned with drowsy-driver detection.
The safety package is strongest once you move beyond the lower trims, so if safety tech matters most, the SL is the sweet spot.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Nissan Maxima?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 21.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 587 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.31% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 48.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,984.63, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Nissan Maxima's resale value?
The current average of $12,437 sits slightly below last year's $12,997.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, it also means resale performance will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Nissan Maxima safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera, NissanConnect Services safety features, and an Easy Fill Tire Alert system. Higher trims add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, a 360-degree monitoring system, predictive forward-collision warning, and forward emergency braking.
The Maxima does not offer lane-departure warning or lane-keeping assist, and drowsy-driver detection is reserved for the Platinum trim. That means you should pay close attention to trim level if advanced driver-assistance features matter to you.
Should I buy a 2016 Nissan Maxima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 21.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 48.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.31% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review says the car’s appeal depends heavily on styling: if you like the way it looks, you’re likely to like the rest of it too.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a good pick if you want a stylish, well-liked Maxima and you’re willing to shop carefully for condition and history. If you’re more price-sensitive, the softer market and decent deal share make this a year worth targeting, but you should still prioritize a clean history report and a thorough inspection before buying.
