Why it stands out
The 2016 Nissan Maxima stands out first and foremost for its styling. The test-drive notes make clear that if you do not like the way the new Maxima looks, nothing else about it is likely to change your mind. That makes design a defining part of its appeal, and it is the kind of car that will strongly attract buyers who respond to its appearance before anything else.
Beyond looks, the Maxima is presented as a car that rewards people who already like its design. The summary says that if you like the way this car looks, you are probably going to like everything else about it. Owner feedback supports that impression, with praise for its comfort, handling, and spacious interior, along with solid performance. At the same time, reliability concerns do appear in user feedback, so the 2016 Maxima’s appeal is strongest for shoppers who value style, driving feel, and cabin space, while being mindful that ownership experiences have not been uniformly positive.

I love the car a lot and I would recommend a maxima to everyone. The features are great, especially the safety ones, my favorite one is the cooled seats. I love the interior. I don’t think it’s missing anything. To compare I like this models better then a lot of other brands and it doesn’t get better then this.

The overview also frames it as a car that appeals most if you value appearance first, then driving feel and cabin space. With 26.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Nissan Maxima reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that many drivers find dependable, with praise centered on comfort, solid performance, and a generally trouble-free ownership experience for many buyers. The expert notes also say Maxima buyers can likely rely on dependability, with the model’s quality and reliability having impressed owners for the past decade. The review adds that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that reliability experiences are not uniform, so a careful inspection and service-history review matter more than usual.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Nissan Maxima?
At 47.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, and whether the car’s equipment works as expected. Because the Maxima’s appeal is tied closely to its styling and technology, condition and completeness matter a lot.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Maxima S starts the lineup, while the SL adds safety technologies, a dual-panel sunroof, premium audio, active noise cancellation, active sound enhancement, ambient cabin lighting, and a heated steering wheel. The SR is the sportier choice with paddle shifters, a sport suspension, a front performance chassis damper, 19-inch wheels, and an Integrated Dynamics Module, while the Platinum sits at the top with the most equipment.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 300 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission that is tuned to feel more like a traditional automatic. The Sport mode sharpens throttle response and adds more urgency, while the car’s front-drive layout means there is no torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive option.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes a reversing camera, NissanConnect Services safety features, and an Easy Fill Tire Alert system. The SL adds blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, a 360-degree monitoring system, predictive forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist are not offered, and drowsy-driver detection is reserved for the Platinum.
- Infotainment: NissanConnect is standard, with navigation and NissanConnect Services. The system includes remote engine start, remote access to locks, lights, and horn, automatic collision notification, emergency calling, a stolen-vehicle locator, destination download capability, Google Send to Car, and a hands-free text-messaging assistant.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates are 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined, while the test average was 21.8 mpg.
Which 2016 Nissan Maxima trim should I buy?
The 2016 Nissan Maxima is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, SL, SR, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Maxima’s styling and V6 power at the lowest starting price and do not need the extra comfort or safety equipment found higher up.
- SV: This trim adds leather, heated front seats and side mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, and an 8-way power driver’s seat with thigh support extension, making it a strong value if you want a better-equipped daily driver without jumping to the pricier trims.
- SL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds predictive forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a dual-panel sunroof, premium audio, active noise cancellation, active sound enhancement, ambient cabin lighting, and a heated steering wheel.
- SR: Choose this if you want the sportiest setup in the lineup, with paddle shifters, a sport suspension, a front performance chassis damper, 19-inch wheels, and the Integrated Dynamics Module with Active Ride Control, Active Trace Control, and Active Engine Brake.
- Platinum: This is the top trim for shoppers who want the most upscale Maxima experience, and it is also the trim where drowsy-driver detection is reserved.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Nissan Maxima?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 619 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.09% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 47.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,985, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Nissan Maxima's resale value?
The current average of $11,989 sits slightly below last year's $12,631.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you are thinking about future resale. For a seller, it means pricing competitively matters, especially if your car is not in standout condition or does not have a strong equipment package. The Maxima’s styling-driven appeal can still support demand, but buyers are clearly price-sensitive.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Nissan Maxima safe?
The 2016 Nissan Maxima earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera, NissanConnect Services safety features, and an Easy Fill Tire Alert system. Higher trims add more advanced driver assistance, including blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, a 360-degree monitoring system, predictive forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist are not offered, and drowsy-driver detection is limited to the Platinum trim.
Should I buy a 2016 Nissan Maxima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 47.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.09% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary says that if you like the way this car looks, you’re probably going to like everything else about it.
The bottom line: The 2016 Maxima makes the most sense if you want the styling, strong V6 performance, and a well-equipped cabin at a softened price. If you are shopping carefully and want the best mix of value and equipment, the SL is the trim to focus on. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep an eye on lower-priced S and SV listings, but make sure the condition and history are clean before you commit.
