CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Summary
With 1,039 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,325, 32.7% of 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4.64 / 5 stars.
55.4% of 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class stands out as a used luxury sedan that blends a polished, upscale feel with a strong reputation for technology and comfort. In its fifth-generation form, it was introduced in 2016 as a sedan, with wagon versions following later the same year, and it brought a more S-Class-like look along with a high-tech cabin. The interior is defined by a swoopy dashboard, circular air vents, and, in most versions, two side-by-side 12.3-inch display screens that create the appearance of one large screen. Standard equipment is generous, with electric adjustment for the steering wheel and front seats, a rear-view camera, satellite navigation, LED headlamps, and a wealth of driver-assistance safety features.
What makes the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class especially appealing is how much performance and refinement it offers across the range. The available engines include 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter six-cylinder options, all with a nine-speed automatic transmission, and some versions are available with rear-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive. The model also includes Mercedes-AMG variants for buyers who want much stronger performance, while the standard car still feels like a true luxury vehicle. Owners commonly praise its classic styling, comfortable drive, and the six-cylinder engine’s performance, which fits the car’s upscale character well.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The E-Class is expensive, even by class standards, and some owners have reported juddering brakes, glitchy infotainment systems, and, on early E300 models, a potential cracked-piston issue. Even so, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class remains a compelling used choice because it delivers a lot of comfort, prestige, and technology for the money, while still feeling current and well built.

Moving from sn SUV to a sedan the E400 series offered Mercedes dependability and performance at an affordable price. Thrilled with my purchase. I had looked at the 300 but at 6-4 I found the 400 to be more comfortable.

How much does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,465 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,004 |
| Year-Round High | $15,969 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,607 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −0.91% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 1,023 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare by condition, mileage, and equipment.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good car?
Yes — the 4.64/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners repeatedly praise its classic styling, comfortable drive, and the performance of the 6-cylinder engine, and the model’s upscale cabin and generous standard equipment make it appealing if you want a luxury sedan that feels polished and well equipped. If you’re shopping for a used luxury car that balances comfort, technology, and everyday refinement, this model year fits that brief well. With 35.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a meaningful chance to find a competitively priced example.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback highlights reliability, and the summary also points to a comfortable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers. That said, you should still expect the usual used-luxury-car risk profile, where maintenance history and condition matter a lot more than the badge alone. For long-term ownership, a well-documented example is the safer bet.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and service history before you go any further. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, with extra attention on brakes, infotainment behavior, and overall mechanical condition. Because this is a luxury model, you’ll want to focus on how well the car has been maintained rather than just how it looks in photos.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can be selective without expecting deep bargain-bin pricing.
- Deal availability: 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,023 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,004, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class's resale value?
The current average of $15,465 sits slightly below last year's $15,607.
That small decline suggests the market has been fairly stable, which can help future sellers because it reduces the risk of sharp value swings. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you’re more likely to preserve value than if you overpay for a rough example. The model’s luxury appeal and broad shopper interest should continue to support demand, especially for clean, well-maintained listings.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
The 2016 is a strong choice if you want a well-equipped luxury sedan with solid owner approval and a stable price profile. If you’re focused on value, this year makes sense when you find a clean, well-documented example at the lower end of the market; if you want to shop more aggressively on price, you may want to compare nearby years and prioritize the best-maintained car rather than the newest badge.
