CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW 5 Series

Summary
With 884 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,582, 31.3% of 2016 BMW 5 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW 5 Series 5 / 5 stars.
59.6% of 2016 BMW 5 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW 5 Series stands out as a midsize luxury sedan that still puts a premium on performance, even as it leans more toward comfort and refinement than the sharper BMWs of the past. In this generation, BMW offered a range of engines and drivetrains, including rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive on select models, along with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The lineup also included the 528i, 535i, and 550i, plus the ActiveHybrid 5, giving buyers a broad spread of power and efficiency choices. For shoppers who wanted a more engaging version, the M Sport suspension was a notable draw.
It also brought a useful mix of technology and everyday luxury. BMW added Parking Assist, a 10.2-inch screen, iDrive 6, ventilated front seats, a rear entertainment system, and available active safety features such as adaptive cruise control, surround view cameras, and a head-up display. At the same time, the car’s complexity and maintenance demands are part of the tradeoff, and the source notes that the early years of this generation do not have the strongest reliability reputation. Even so, the 2016 BMW 5 Series remains appealing for buyers who want a well-equipped, comfortable sedan with real driving ability and a strong sense of occasion.

The bmw 550i is just plain excellent. I purchased mine about 5 hours away from home so I had a pretty proper test immediately. It’s very powerful and extremely comfortable which is exactly what I want from a luxury vehicle.

How much does the 2016 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,626 |
| Year-Round Low | $12,273 |
| Year-Round High | $13,634 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,624 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.33% |
Prices have softened 7.33% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 881 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2016 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2016 BMW 5 Series earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, luxurious comfort, and extensive range of features. Many also highlight the smooth driving experience and the M Sport suspension as standout strengths. For you, that means this model fits especially well if you want a midsize luxury sedan that balances everyday comfort with real driving appeal. With 32.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Reviewers describe the car as dependable in the ways that matter to daily ownership, especially when it comes to comfort, performance, and feature-rich usability. The feedback also suggests that many owners feel confident living with it over time, even if some individual vehicles can show quirks in engine noise or shifting behavior. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is best managed by focusing on maintenance history and condition rather than assuming every example will age the same way.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW 5 Series?
At 59.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with past damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage or heavily optioned cars where repair costs can add up. Focus your condition check on signs of uneven wear, deferred maintenance, and any issues that could affect long-term ownership costs.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW 5 Series?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently and still find value.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 881 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.33% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,273, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $12,626 sits slightly below last year's $13,624.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A lower entry cost can make it easier to preserve value later, especially if you choose a well-kept example with strong service records. Demand should remain steadier for cars that present well and feel properly maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.33% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $17,147, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $12,626 average.
- The redesign brings a fresh chassis, updated tech, and a more modern driving feel.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2016 is the smarter starting point because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer redesign and a more modern package, the 2017 is the better secondary path for buyers who prioritize the latest version over savings.
