What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Renegade?

At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, safety equipment, and signs of prior repair. Because the Renegade’s appeal depends heavily on condition and equipment, it’s worth focusing on how well the cabin, electronics, and drivetrain have held up. If you’re comparing multiple listings, put the cleanest history and best-documented maintenance at the top of your list.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Renegade is offered in Sport, Latitude, Limited, Trailhawk, 75th Anniversary Edition, and Dawn of Justice Special Edition. The Sport is the stripped-down entry point, while the Trailhawk adds skid plates, hill-descent control, improved approach, departure, and breakover angles, plus 8.7 inches of ground clearance. The Trailhawk is the best fit if you want the most capability, while the better-equipped trims suit you if you care more about comfort and convenience.
• Powertrain: The standard setup is a turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder with a manual gearbox, while the optional 2.4-liter 4-cylinder comes with an automatic transmission. The 2.4-liter is responsive around town and easier if you want an automatic, but passing power can be limited when the vehicle is loaded.
• Safety package: The available Advanced Technology package includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear parking assist with rear cross-traffic alert. It is recommended on versions other than the basic Sport model.
• Infotainment: The Renegade uses a 6.5-inch display, and it does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Uconnect Access adds voice text-message features and emergency assistance functions.
• Fuel efficiency: The review says the Renegade is rated at 24 mpg combined, and the test vehicle returned 21.4 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2016 Jeep Renegade trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Renegade is offered in 6 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, Trailhawk, 75th Anniversary Edition, and Dawn of Justice Special Edition.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the least expensive way into the Renegade, but it is the stripped-down version, so you give up the extra comfort and convenience equipment found higher up the range.
• Latitude: This is the best-value trim if you want a more complete everyday setup, especially when paired with the available 2.4-liter engine and automatic transmission.
• Limited: Choose this if you want a more upscale-feeling Renegade with more of the premium touches that help the cabin feel richer.
• Trailhawk: This is the one to buy if you want the Renegade’s strongest off-road character, with skid plates, hill-descent control, and the highest ground clearance.
• 75th Anniversary Edition: Pick this if you want a special-edition version with added visual distinction.
• Dawn of Justice Special Edition: This is for shoppers who want a themed special edition rather than the plainest or most capability-focused version.

The safety package is especially worth seeking out on non-Sport trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Renegade?

This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,419 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.99% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,685, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Renegade's resale value?

The current average of $9,685 sits slightly below last year's $10,761.

That decline suggests the Renegade has become more affordable for used buyers, which can make it easier to move later if you buy at the right price. For a future seller, the current market shows that value has already adjusted downward, so condition, mileage, and equipment will matter more when it’s time to resell. A well-kept example with desirable features should still attract attention, especially because the model has strong owner satisfaction.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Jeep Renegade safe?

The 2016 Jeep Renegade earns four-star ratings for driver and front passenger protection in a frontal collision, three-star ratings for rear seat side-impact protection, and three-star ratings for rollover resistance with 4-wheel drive from NHTSA.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

The available Advanced Technology package adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear parking assist with rear cross-traffic alert. That package is especially important because the base setup leaves you with less of the active safety coverage you may want in a used family vehicle. The safety review also notes that the Renegade had not yet been rated by IIHS at the time, and that the crash-test results are a concern.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Renegade or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.99% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for its playful styling, everyday usability, and available off-road capability.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $9,023, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $9,685 average.
• The 2015 is Jeep’s all-new small crossover with off-road chops and a distinctive personality.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current pricing, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly alternative, especially if you find a clean example with the right equipment.

The Renegade brings more personality and stronger off-road character, while the 500X edges it on expert score and fuel economy.
