What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda HR-V?

At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Pay close attention to signs of prior body damage, uneven panel gaps, and any evidence that repairs were done poorly. It also makes sense to focus on how the cabin and controls feel in daily use, since owner feedback and expert commentary both point to usability as a major part of the HR-V experience.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX covers the basics with a rear-view camera, the Magic Seat rear seat, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a 5-inch color LCD audio system with Bluetooth and USB. The EX adds automatic climate control, rear privacy glass, a power moonroof, heated front seats, push-button start, and a 7-inch touchscreen, while the EX-L with Navigation adds leather-trimmed seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, roof rails, and navigation. The EX is the best-value choice if you want the biggest step up in comfort and convenience.
• Powertrain: All models use a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine with 141 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed manual is standard with front-wheel drive, while the CVT is available and is paired with all-wheel drive. The setup is tuned more for smooth, efficient everyday driving than hard acceleration.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes a rear-view camera, brake assist, and vehicle stability assist. Honda’s ACE body structure and an expanded-view driver’s side mirror are also part of the safety story, and the optional Honda LaneWatch camera system adds another layer of visibility. The infotainment and LaneWatch setup can take some getting used to, so make sure you’re comfortable with it.
• Infotainment: The LX uses a 5-inch color LCD, while the EX upgrades to a 7-inch WVGA touchscreen with dual USB ports and 180 watts powering 6 speakers. The system includes Bluetooth, Pandora integration, HondaLink Next Generation, SMS text-message capability, and navigation with traffic information on equipped trims. The interface is a known weak point, so test it carefully.
• Fuel efficiency: The HR-V is rated at 28 mpg city/35 highway, with 31 mpg combined in front-wheel-drive form and 29 mpg combined with all-wheel drive. The expert review also notes that real-world commuting economy can be strong.

Which 2016 Honda HR-V trim should I buy?

The 2016 Honda HR-V is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, and EX-L with Navigation.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the value play if you want the lowest-cost way into the HR-V. You still get the rear-view camera, Magic Seat rear seat, alloy wheels, and basic connectivity, so it covers the essentials well.
• EX: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the comfort and convenience upgrades that make daily use easier, including heated front seats, automatic climate control, push-button start, and the larger touchscreen.
• EX-L with Navigation: Choose this if you want the most upscale HR-V experience. It adds leather, roof rails, and navigation, and it is the trim that best matches the model’s more refined side.

The safety package centers on a rear-view camera, brake assist, vehicle stability assist, and Honda’s ACE body structure, with Honda LaneWatch available as an option.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Honda HR-V?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly when you find a strong listing.

• Deal availability: 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 631 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,042, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Honda HR-V's resale value?

The current average of $13,722 sits slightly above last year's $13,613.

That small increase suggests the HR-V has held its value fairly well rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For you as a future seller, that kind of stability is helpful because it points to a market that remains familiar with the model and willing to pay for it.

The steady pricing also suggests that well-kept examples should remain easier to move than vehicles with a more volatile price history. If your HR-V has strong maintenance records and clean history, you should be in a better position when it comes time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Honda HR-V safe?

The 2016 Honda HR-V earns an overall five-star safety rating from the U.S. Government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes a rear-view camera, brake assist, and vehicle stability assist. Honda’s ACE body structure is also part of the safety package, and the optional Honda LaneWatch camera system adds visibility on the passenger side.

One important caveat is that the infotainment and camera interfaces can be distracting to use while driving, and the expert review treats that as a meaningful safety drawback. If you test-drive one, make sure you’re comfortable using the controls without taking your attention off the road.

Should I buy a 2016 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert review highlights a compact crossover that emphasizes value, usability, and a refined ride, while also noting that the infotainment system is a weak point.

The bottom line: The 2016 HR-V makes sense if you want a small crossover with strong owner satisfaction, steady pricing, and a practical feature set. If you’re price-sensitive, the best move is to focus on clean-history examples with the right trim and avoid paying extra for a poorly equipped or heavily worn listing.
