How much does the 2016 GMC Yukon XL cost?

Prices have softened 12.77% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 769 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL a good car?

Generally — you’re looking at a 4.3/5 user rating and a 6.7/10 expert rating, which points to a vehicle that resonates with owners even if it has some clear tradeoffs. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Technology.

Owners consistently praise the Yukon XL for its spaciousness, comfort, and family-friendly utility, especially when you need room for 8 or 9 passengers and plenty of cargo space. The overview also highlights its serious towing ability and long list of convenience features, which fits buyers who want a full-size SUV that can handle people, gear, and road trips with ease.

At the same time, the market context suggests you should shop selectively rather than impulsively. With 30.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are worthwhile opportunities if you compare carefully.

Is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a vehicle that many drivers find dependable in day-to-day family use, with praise centered on comfort, spaciousness, and convenience. That said, the same feedback also raises concerns about brake failures, rearview camera problems at night, and exterior quality, so you should treat condition and maintenance history as especially important.

The expert cost-effectiveness notes also flag reliability as a weak spot, with the model scoring below average in most categories. For used buyers, that means the biggest ownership risk is not just age or mileage, but whether the specific example has been cared for consistently and avoided known problem areas.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 GMC Yukon XL?

At 54.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on body, safety, and electrical systems. Because the model’s owner feedback includes concerns about brake failures and rearview camera issues, you’ll want to focus on how the truck stops, how its driver aids function, and whether all convenience features work as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Starting at the base SLE trim, you get 9-person capacity, front and rear parking sensors, auto headlights and wipers, a rear-view camera, remote ignition, keyless entry, foglights, running boards, roof rails, tri-zone auto climate control, rear privacy glass, power front seats, cruise control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a 9-speaker Bose stereo, HD and satellite radio, 5 USB ports, an Aux input, and 4G LTE with a Wi-Fi hotspot. The SLT adds more comfort and convenience, including keyless ignition and entry, a hands-free power liftgate, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated power second row, power-folding third row, power-folding mirrors with auto-dim, a heated power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, driver memory, wireless charging, and ambient interior lighting. The Denali adds a unique chrome grille, 20-inch alloys, xenon headlights, a customizable digital instrument panel, a larger V8 engine, a magneto-rheological suspension, navigation, second-row captain’s chairs, an upgraded 10-speaker Bose Surround Sound stereo, and active noise cancellation.
• Powertrain: SLE and SLT models use a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. You can choose rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive with a 2-speed transfer case and low-range gearing, and the EPA estimates 16 mpg city/23 highway with RWD and 15/22 with 4WD. The Denali uses a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: The Enhanced Driver Alert package adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and a vibrating seat alert. On the SLT, it also includes rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise with crash-avoidance braking is also mentioned as an available feature.
• Infotainment: The Yukon XL uses an 8-inch touchscreen with the upgraded IntelliLink system, Bluetooth, a 9-speaker Bose stereo, HD and satellite radio, 5 USB ports, an Aux input, an SD slot, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The processor upgrade helps reduce input delay, and Apple CarPlay is part of the 2016 updates.
• Fuel efficiency: The 5.3-liter V8 is rated at 16 mpg city and 23 highway with rear-wheel drive, and 15 mpg city and 22 highway with 4WD. The 6.2-liter V8 is rated at 14 mpg city and 20 highway with 4WD.

Which 2016 GMC Yukon XL trim should I buy?

The 2016 GMC Yukon XL is offered in 3 trim levels: SLE, SLT, Denali.

Here's the short version:

• SLE: This is the value-focused choice if you want the core Yukon XL experience without stretching into luxury pricing. You still get the big cabin, strong towing hardware, an 8-inch touchscreen, and a long list of standard convenience features, so it covers the essentials well.
• SLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a much richer comfort and convenience package, including heated and ventilated front seats, a heated second row, a hands-free power liftgate, wireless charging, and more advanced safety content. If you want the Yukon XL to feel genuinely upscale without going all the way to Denali pricing, this is the trim to target.
• Denali: Choose this if you want the most premium Yukon XL experience, including the larger V8, upgraded audio, active noise cancellation, and the most distinctive exterior and interior presentation. It’s the right pick if luxury and refinement matter more than value.

The safety package is strongest on the SLT, where the Enhanced Driver Alert package is included.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 GMC Yukon XL?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you have room to shop, but the best examples still deserve quick action.

• Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 769 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.77% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,970, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL's resale value?

The current average of $16,970 sits slightly below last year's $19,455.

That decline suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make this a better purchase than a year ago but a softer asset if you’re thinking about future resale. If you buy now, your upside comes from entering at a lower price point than previous shoppers faced.

For a future seller, the key question is whether the truck remains desirable enough to offset its age and ownership costs. Well-kept examples with strong equipment and clean history should hold up better than neglected ones, especially because shoppers in this segment tend to compare condition closely.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL safe?

The 2016 GMC Yukon XL earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and five-star ratings in side crash.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Yukon XL includes the Enhanced Driver Alert package, which adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and a vibrating seat alert. On SLT trims, that package also brings rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring.

There are still caveats to keep in mind. The expert safety summary says overall safety could be better, and braking performance trails some rivals, so you should pay close attention to the condition of the brakes and the operation of the driver-assistance features on any used example.

Should I buy a 2016 GMC Yukon XL or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.77% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 adds useful updates like Apple CarPlay, lane-keep assist, auto high beams, and a faster IntelliLink processor.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of updated features and lower pricing, the 2016 is the year to focus on. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully and look for the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than chasing the newest trim or the lowest sticker alone.
