CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Ford Focus
overall

Summary
With 1,208 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,348.00, 24.3% of 2016 Ford Focus models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford Focus 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
61.3% of 2016 Focus models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Focus stands out as a refreshed version of Ford’s small car, and the update gives it a more polished feel without changing its basic mission. It is a 4-door, 5-passenger small car, and the expert test drive data says it has improved in some key areas for 2016 while still not being perfect. That same source also notes that it retains the title of America’s Best Small Car for now, which helps explain why it remained a notable choice in a crowded economy-car segment.
What makes the 2016 Ford Focus appealing is the way it balances everyday practicality with refinement. The summary frames success in this class around familiar priorities such as fuel economy, price, cupholders, ride quality, and easy-to-use controls, and the Focus is presented through that pragmatic lens. It is described as much more refined than the two generations before it, and the user review summary reinforces that appeal by pointing to smooth rides, great fuel economy, sporty handling, and a generally satisfying ownership experience. At the same time, the car is not portrayed as flawless: the expert test drive data says it is still not perfect, and owners mentioned concerns about engine responsiveness and a gearshift that can be too smooth, which suggests the Focus’s strengths are balanced by a few everyday frustrations.

Just bought this car yesterday! It runs super quiet, and shifts incredibly smoothly. Air works so well I had to turn it off for a bit because I got cold. Gearshift is a little tricky, it moves almost too smoothly and makes it pretty easy to shift into the wrong gear by mistake, but I imagine that will be just a case of muscle memory. 55k miles, but looks and drives like new. Overall, very excited to make this car mine!

There are 1,191 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $8,164.56, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Ford Focus a good car?
Yes — the 4.62/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.33/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the Focus for its smooth rides, great fuel economy, and sporty handling. The overview also frames it as a practical small car with a more polished feel, which fits the way it balances everyday usability with refinement. That combination makes it appealing if you want economical transportation that still feels a bit more engaging than the average commuter car.
The market also shows 25.9% good or great deals, so there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Ford Focus reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback describes the Focus as reliable and trouble-free for many owners, with praise for its generally satisfying ownership experience and modern features. The expert drive notes also emphasize that it is meant to be economical, reliable transportation for the everyday commute, which reinforces its dependability focus.
The cost-effectiveness notes point to respectable fuel economy and livable daily-driver manners, which can help reduce ownership stress over time. Still, used buyers should pay close attention to maintenance history and how the car has been driven, since small-car wear and past neglect can affect long-term ownership risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Focus?
At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
Start with a vehicle history report and make sure any prior damage lines up with the current condition. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of body panels, paint consistency, tires, and suspension behavior, since those areas can reveal whether a car has been repaired well or simply patched up. You should also test the controls, transmission behavior, and everyday drivability so you know the car still feels right in normal use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes S, SE, and Titanium, and the base setup is the most stripped-down. The SE adds more everyday flexibility, while the Titanium brings the most upscale feel.
- Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque. An available 1.0-liter EcoBoost turbo three-cylinder makes 123 hp and 125 lb-ft, and the lineup is front-wheel drive.
- Safety package: The backup camera includes virtual guidelines, and available parking sensors can help with parallel parking. The large side mirrors with inset wide-angle mirrors are a standout feature because they reduce blind spots.
- Infotainment: The screen is small, but it has vivid fonts and is easy to read. Ford’s Sync system adds voice control for the stereo and Bluetooth-paired smartphone functions, though the main screen could be bigger.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter automatic returns 27 mpg city/40 highway/31 combined. The 1.0-liter automatic returns 28/40/32 combined, and the 1.0-liter manual can reach 42 mpg highway.
Which 2016 Ford Focus trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford Focus is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S is the most basic choice, and it misses some of the nicer everyday conveniences and polish that make the Focus easier to live with.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SE is the best value because it balances price, features, and drivability without pushing you into the most expensive version.
- Premium/top trim: The Titanium is the most upscale choice, with the most standard equipment and the most polished overall feel.
The safety-package note to keep in mind is that the available parking sensors are helpful, but they are not standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Focus?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 25.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,191 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.45% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,164.56, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford Focus's resale value?
The current average of $8,422 sits slightly below last year's $9,003.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained. If you keep the car clean, documented, and mechanically sound, you give yourself a better chance of standing out when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford Focus safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Focus’s safety strengths are more practical than flashy: the large side mirrors with inset wide-angle mirrors do a lot to reduce blind spots, and the backup camera includes virtual guidelines that turn with the wheel. Available parking sensors also help in tight spaces.
The main caveat is that the screen is small, which makes the backup camera less convenient than it could be. That means you should pay attention to how well the driver aids work in real use, especially if you rely on them for parking and low-speed maneuvering.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Focus or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.45% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The refreshed model year brings a more polished feel and stronger refinement.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,669, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,422 average.
- It offers a more sophisticated feel than many shoppers expect.
The bottom line: If you want the more refined version with stronger current-market availability, the 2016 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the smarter value play, especially if you find one with a clean history and solid maintenance records.
