Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford F-150 stands out as a pickup that leans hard into luxury without abandoning its truck identity. Ford’s F-150 Limited is described as a genuine luxury vehicle in all but name, and it is presented as loaded with extras and tasteful trimmings. That combination gives it a more upscale feel than buyers might expect from a full-size, light-duty pickup.
What makes it especially appealing is the way those upscale touches are paired with a strong overall reputation. The summary calls it arguably the best full-size, light-duty pickup you can buy, which helps explain why it can look like a value despite a high price. For shoppers who want a truck that feels more refined than rugged, the 2016 Ford F-150 offers a distinctive blend of comfort, equipment, and prestige.
At the same time, the high price is part of the story, and it is worth keeping in mind for used buyers. The available owner feedback also points to comfort, power, and a smooth ride as recurring strengths, while noting that storage options can feel limited and that higher-mileage examples may be expensive.

First off, the waffles color (a beautiful, unique shade) really makes this truck stand out. It turns heads everywhere I go. The leather interior gives it a premium feel, and the sunroof adds an open, airy vibe, especially on sunny drives. This truck is packed with features—from the tech to the comfort, it has everything you could want. Whether it’s advanced infotainment, driver assists, or the luxury finishes, it doesn’t miss. The engine is powerful and responsive, making highway merges and towing feel effortless.

Great value for the vehicle. High mileage but that is not an issue like it used to be.

The truck spent the first 5 years in Michigan. There was new undercoating over the entire bottom of vehicle. In the cracks of the leaf springs and other crevices I could see crusty rust. Didn’t even take it for a drive.

For your use case, that means you’re looking at a truck that can work hard and still feel comfortable for daily driving, family duty, or long trips. The market also shows 29.7% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Ford F-150 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as reliable, dependable, and a truck they can count on, with several noting strong long-term ownership appeal. The expert evaluation also points to better-than-average reliability, and the truck’s powertrain is described as durable and confidence-inspiring in everyday use.
Ford also includes 911 Assist through Sync at no monthly subscription cost, which adds a practical ownership perk. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is age-related wear, so condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge itself.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford F-150?
At 66.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on signs of prior body repair, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, brake feel, and any evidence that the truck was used hard for towing or hauling. Because this model year can be found in many configurations, make sure the equipment on the truck you’re considering matches your needs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base XL is the most stripped-down choice, while higher trims add more upscale materials and convenience features. The Limited stands out with caramel-colored leather, eucalyptus wood accents, and a more luxury-oriented cabin.
- Powertrain: The standard twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 makes 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, with 11,800 pounds of towing capacity and an EPA estimate of 17 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Ford offers adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, plus blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and a lane-keeping system. Some of these features are available rather than standard, so check the exact equipment on the truck you’re considering.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 brings a capacitive touchscreen, swipe capability, improved voice recognition, Siri compatibility, navigation with pinch-to-zoom, and Wi-Fi software updates.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says this truck should return 17 mpg combined, and the test result came in at 16.7 mpg.
Which 2016 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford F-150 is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The XL is the most affordable path, but it lacks the upscale materials and premium feel that define the higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: The XLT is the best value if you want a more complete truck without jumping into luxury pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the standout if you want the richest cabin, with caramel-colored leather, eucalyptus wood, and a near-luxury presentation.
The safety package is available with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, brake support, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keeping assistance, but automatic emergency braking is not included.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford F-150?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting deep distress pricing across the board.
- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,354 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.43% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,918.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford F-150's resale value?
The current average of $19,027 sits slightly below last year's $20,335.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays under pressure. If you plan to sell later, condition, mileage, and trim choice will matter a lot, especially for trucks that have been used for towing or work.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford F-150 safe?
earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford includes 911 Assist through Sync, which can automatically contact emergency responders if the airbags deploy and your paired device is in the vehicle. Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and a lane-keeping system.
One important caveat is that the truck is not eligible for Top Safety Pick+ because it does not have automatic emergency braking. The lane-keeping and forward-collision systems also showed occasional false warnings during testing.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.43% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 adds Sync 3 and Pro Trailer Backup Assist, making it especially appealing for tech-minded truck shoppers.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $17,924, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $19,027 average.
- It emphasizes the aluminum-body redesign and broad configurability.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $21,913, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $19,027 average.
- It adds the return of the Raptor and broader performance appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and satisfaction, the 2016 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is spending less, the 2015 is the value play; if you want to pay more for newer-year appeal and added performance cachet, the 2017 is the upgrade path.
