What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Dodge Challenger?

At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on overall condition rather than just mileage, since interior wear, visibility concerns, and tire condition can matter a lot on a car like this. If you’re comparing several examples, the cleanest, best-documented car is usually the smarter buy.

Which 2016 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?

The 2016 Dodge Challenger is offered in 5 trim levels: SXT, R/T, SRT 392, Hellcat, and R/T Scat Pack.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the entry point, but it still gives you a strong feature set with keyless entry and ignition, automatic headlights, dual-zone climate control, and the 5-inch touchscreen. It’s the trim to choose if you want the Challenger look and everyday comfort without paying for V8 power.
• R/T: This is the first V8 trim and the better choice if you want the classic muscle-car experience. It adds the 5.7-liter V8, upgraded brakes, 20-inch wheels, a spoiler, and a rear-view camera, making it the best-value pick for most buyers who want real performance without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• SRT 392: This trim steps up to the 6.4-liter V8, bigger Brembo brakes, forged alloy wheels, adaptive suspension, and more premium equipment. It suits you if you want a more serious performance setup and are willing to pay for it.
• Hellcat: This is the extreme choice, with the supercharged V8 and additional high-performance hardware. It’s for buyers who want maximum output and are shopping for the most dramatic version of the Challenger.
• R/T Scat Pack: This version pairs the 6.4-liter V8 with Brembo brakes, a sport exhaust, and the Super Track Pack, which adds 20-inch wheels, sport tuning for the steering and suspension, and a more aggressive axle ratio. It’s the best fit if you want a more focused performance setup than the standard R/T and can live with the firmer, more aggressive character.

The Driver Convenience Group and Technology Group are worth seeking out if you want more safety and convenience features, especially on higher trims.

The current average of $24,347 sits slightly below last year's $24,503.

That small decline suggests the market has been fairly stable, which is helpful if you plan to resell later. Should I buy a 2016 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 26.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.76/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds fresh trim and wheel options, plus the shaker hood, while keeping the Challenger’s authentic retro muscle-car character.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $21,177, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $24,347 average.
• It blends retro style with everyday livability.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $20,641, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $24,347 average.
• It adds all-wheel drive for calmer, more versatile driving.

The bottom line: If you want the most authentic retro-muscle feel in this price band, the 2016 is the one to target. If your priority is saving money, the 2015 and 2017 can make sense, but the 2016’s mix of style, performance, and usability makes it the strongest all-around pick for most used buyers.
