Is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado a good car?

Generally — the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado earns a 4.2/5 user rating and a 6.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its value, performance, and comfort, and they also like its manageable size and capability. The market also shows 29.7% of listings are good or great deals, which supports the case for shopping carefully.

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado reliable?

The owner feedback points to a truck that feels dependable, with praise centered on value, performance, comfort, and the ability to count on its manageable size and capability. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Colorado can be a practical truck for city use and weekend gear, which reinforces its everyday dependability. Chevrolet also highlights useful ownership-friendly features such as OnStar crash response and a backup camera, and the truck’s available safety tech adds confidence for long-term use.

For used buyers, the main ownership risk is making sure the truck has been maintained well and hasn’t picked up hidden wear from hard use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, bed condition, and any signs of prior repair. Because this is a pickup, pay extra attention to how the truck was used, since bed wear, towing strain, and cosmetic damage can matter more than on a typical commuter vehicle. A careful test drive should also confirm that the truck feels consistent in daily driving and that its features work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Base trim comes with LED headlights, a 6-speaker stereo, a power driver’s seat, and a USB port, while the LT adds power mirrors, an additional USB port, and 4G LTE hotspot capability. The Z71 adds a power-locking tailgate, heavy-duty suspension, all-terrain tires, and remote start, so it is the trim to focus on if you want the most truck-focused equipment.
• Powertrain: The Colorado offers a 200-horsepower inline four-cylinder, a 305-horsepower 3.6-liter V6, and a 2.8-liter Duramax diesel with 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The diesel is the standout for efficiency and stronger low-end pull, while the gas engines are described as less impressive for acceleration.
• Safety package: Every Colorado comes with a backup camera, and available driver aids include lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert. OnStar crash response is also included, and the driver’s-side mirror has a wide-angle inset mirror to help reduce the blind spot.
• Infotainment: MyLink uses a 4.2-inch color screen in base form, while other models get an 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay is available, and the system supports voice control for navigation and media.
• Fuel efficiency: The diesel gets 22 mpg city/31 highway/25 combined with rear-wheel drive, and 20/29/23 with 4WD. The 3.6-liter V6 with 4WD returns 17/24/20.

Which 2016 Chevrolet Colorado trim should I buy?

The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, WT, LT, and Z71.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the least expensive path into the Colorado, but it is also the most stripped-down. You get the essentials, including LED headlights, a 6-speaker stereo, a power driver’s seat, and a USB port, so it works best if you want the lowest entry price and can live without extra convenience features.
• WT: The WT sits above the Base and is the practical choice if you want a work-focused truck without jumping to the higher trims. It is the trim to consider if you want a straightforward Colorado with a more useful equipment mix than the Base.
• LT: The LT is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds power mirrors, another USB port, and 4G LTE hotspot capability. If you want a better daily-driver experience without going all the way to the Z71, this is the trim to target.
• Z71: The Z71 is the most feature-rich and truck-oriented trim, with a power-locking tailgate, heavy-duty suspension, all-terrain tires, and remote start. It makes the most sense if you want the most capability-focused version of the Colorado.

The safety content also notes that every Colorado comes with a backup camera, while lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert are available.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,477 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.95% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 62.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,860, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado's resale value?

The current average of $17,186 sits slightly below last year's $17,708.

That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also suggests future sellers may face some pressure if the market stays loose. A truck that is priced well, has clean history, and presents in strong condition should still be easier to move later than one with accident history or visible wear. The Colorado’s broad appeal as a manageable midsize pickup should continue to support demand.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado safe?

The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Colorado comes with a backup camera, dual-stage front and side impact airbags, and OnStar crash response. Available safety tech includes lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, and the driver’s-side mirror has a wide-angle inset mirror to help reduce the blind spot. That said, some of the more advanced driver aids are not standard across the lineup, so you should confirm the exact equipment on the truck you are considering.

Should I buy a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.95% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for its stout diesel engine and smaller, easier-to-live-with footprint.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $15,934, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,186 average.
• It returns after a 3-year hiatus with modern styling, safety, and technology.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market mix of inventory, pricing, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the value play, especially if you find one in clean condition.

How does the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado compare to the 2016 GMC Canyon?

Our experts score the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado 6.7/10 and the 2016 GMC Canyon 6.3/10.

The Colorado is the slightly stronger pick overall, with a lower average used price and more listings to shop. The Canyon has a slightly higher share of good and great deals, but the Colorado gives you more inventory and a better value starting point. Both trucks share the same engine, horsepower, and fuel-economy figures in this comparison, so your decision comes down more to price, availability, and condition than mechanical differences.
