How much does the 2016 BMW 3 Series cost?

Prices have softened 8.41% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,280 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2016 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.2/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its safety, build quality, comfort, and enjoyable driving experience, and they also like the driving modes that sharpen the car’s character. The overview points to a sedan that blends performance with everyday usability, especially if you want something roomy enough for you and three other people without losing its driver-focused feel. Good and great deals account for 31.8% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to strong safety, build quality, and comfort, and it also describes the car as enjoyable to drive over time. The expert drive notes that BMW improved the transmissions, redesigned the electric steering, and upgraded the suspension for 2016, while the cost-effectiveness notes mention free scheduled maintenance for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age-related wear and prior maintenance history matter a lot, so a careful inspection is worth it.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW 3 Series?

At 53.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on signs of past bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, brake condition, and any steering or suspension issues that could affect the driving feel. If the car has optional equipment, make sure the features you expect are actually present and working.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2016 3 Series is offered in 320i, 328d, 330e, 330i, 340i, and M3 model series. The base cars are more about the core BMW driving experience, while higher trims add more power and equipment; the 340i stands out for its stronger performance, and the M3 is the most focused choice.
• Powertrain: BMW installs a new, lightweight, turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine in this version of the 3 Series, and xDrive AWD is available. An 8-speed sport automatic is standard, a 6-speed manual is a no-charge option, and the car offers Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ driving modes.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance Package adds a reversing camera and parking sensors. The Driver Assistance Plus Package adds forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, an active blind-spot information system, and a 360-degree camera view system. The reversing camera is not standard on the base car.
• Infotainment: iDrive is included in every 3 Series, and BMW says the navigation system starts up quicker, calculates routes faster, and can be updated over Wi-Fi. Navigation, BMW Online, BMW Apps, and a heads-up display are included in the optional Technology Package, and enhanced Bluetooth with smartphone integration is also available.
• Fuel efficiency: The 340i returned 22.4 mpg on a test loop, and BMW cites 23 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2016 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2016 BMW 3 Series is offered in 6 trim levels: 320i, 328d, 330e, 330i, 340i, and M3.

Here's the short version:

• 320i: This is the entry point if you want the 3 Series experience at the lowest rung, but you should expect the fewest extras and the least power in the lineup.
• 328d: This is the diesel choice, so it suits you if efficiency and long-distance commuting matter more than outright speed.
• 330e: This plug-in hybrid adds electrified efficiency to the lineup and is the right pick if you want the most modern powertrain flavor.
• 330i: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it balances equipment, performance, and everyday usability without pushing into the highest-price territory.
• 340i: This is the enthusiast pick if you want the strongest performance and the most dramatic driving character.
• M3: This is the most serious performance model, so it makes sense only if you want the sharpest, most track-focused version of the 3 Series.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that the reversing camera is bundled with the Driver Assistance Package, while the more advanced driver aids come with Driver Assistance Plus.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW 3 Series?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,280 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.41% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,697, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $11,780 sits slightly below last year's $12,862.

That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. For a future seller, that means your biggest advantage will come from buying a clean, well-maintained example rather than paying too much up front. Strong condition, documented service, and desirable equipment should matter more than trying to time a rebound.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2016 BMW 3 Series earns a Marginal result in the IIHS small overlap frontal impact test, while turning in nearly flawless performance in other crash-test assessments from the federal government and the IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW Assist eCall comes standard, with enhanced automatic collision notification and an SOS emergency request button. The Driver Assistance Package adds a reversing camera and parking sensors, while Driver Assistance Plus adds forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, an active blind-spot information system, and a 360-degree camera view system. The main caveat is that the small overlap frontal result is weaker than the rest of the car’s crash-test performance.

Should I buy a 2016 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.41% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• BMW’s 2016 refresh improves the transmissions, steering, and suspension, helping the car feel more sorted than earlier versions.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $10,282, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $11,780 average.
• It still delivers the brand’s sharp driving dynamics and powerful-engine appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded pick, the 2016 is the stronger choice because it brings meaningful updates and still prices below its original market position. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the value alternative, but you give up some of the 2016’s refinement and updates.
