What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Audi A3?

At 53.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, and pay close attention to bodywork, electronics, and how the car drives under load. It also makes sense to compare trim equipment carefully, since some desirable features are reserved for higher versions or packages.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Premium trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, leather, power seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10-speaker stereo, xenon headlights, LED running lights, auto wipers, and a panoramic sunroof on the sedan. Higher trims add features such as 18-inch wheels, heated front seats, a power front passenger seat, keyless entry and ignition, and more advanced tech, while the base trim misses some of the more desirable convenience and driver-assistance equipment.
• Powertrain: The 1.8-liter engine makes 170 hp and is FWD only, while the 2.0-liter turbo adds 50 hp and 58 lb-ft of torque and feels much stronger. The diesel option is the slowest but returns impressive efficiency figures.
• Safety package: Audi Pre-Sense with collision-avoidance braking, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise are part of the available driver-assistance suite, along with stability and traction control, 4-wheel antilock discs, parking sensors, a reversing camera, and a full airbag set. The base Premium trim lacks lane-keep assist.
• Infotainment: The standard setup uses Audi’s MMI interface with a retractable display and a 10-speaker stereo. The upgraded system adds navigation, voice controls, a Wi-Fi hotspot, configurable digital gauges, and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto arrive later.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.8-liter sedan is rated at 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, while the 2.0-liter FWD setup gains 1 mpg in city driving. The diesel is rated at 31 mpg city and 43 mpg highway.

Which 2016 Audi A3 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Audi A3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, Prestige.

Here's the short version:

• Premium: This is the value play if you want the A3’s upscale interior, strong standard equipment, and the lowest entry price. It gives you the core luxury feel without forcing you into the pricier tech and convenience upgrades.
• Premium Plus: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds heated front seats, keyless entry and ignition, a power front passenger seat, and 18-inch wheels. It also moves you closer to the A3’s richer feature set without jumping all the way to the top trim.
• Prestige: This is the trim to choose if you want the fullest tech and safety experience, including adaptive cruise, Audi Pre-Sense, lane-keep assist, navigation, the upgraded MMI system, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, configurable digital gauges, and the 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo.

The base Premium trim does not include lane-keep assist, so shoppers who want the most complete safety package should look higher in the lineup.

That downward move suggests the A3 has become more affordable for buyers, which can make it a tougher car to sell at a premium later. Should I buy a 2016 Audi A3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.70% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 adds newly standard reversing camera, parking sensors, and heated washers and mirrors, plus an available S Line appearance package.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $9,761, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $10,853 average.
• It broadened the A3’s appeal by bringing Audi style and premium-brand polish to a more approachable compact luxury package.

The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped, more polished version of the A3 and you’re comfortable with current market pricing, the 2016 is the stronger pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 remains the value-oriented alternative.

How does the 2016 Audi A3 compare to the 2016 BMW 2 Series?

Our experts score the 2016 Audi A3 7.8/10 and the 2016 BMW 2 Series 7/10. The A3 is the more affordable used buy here, with a lower average price and more listings to choose from. The BMW 2 Series brings more horsepower and slightly better highway fuel economy, but the Audi counters with a stronger value case and a more feature-rich entry-level luxury feel.
