Why it stands out
The 2016 Acura TLX stands out as a performance luxury sedan that aims to balance driving appeal with premium ambition. Acura’s own positioning suggests that it is meant to deliver on both fronts, though the description also implies that doing so depends on added attention to detail. That makes the TLX distinctive as a car that tries to blend sportiness and luxury rather than leaning entirely toward one or the other.
It is also notable for what it represents for Acura more broadly. The summary frames the brand as being in a period of renewal, with leadership changes and a new design direction presented as hopeful first steps. In that context, the 2016 TLX is appealing to buyers who want a sedan tied to Acura’s effort to rebuild its identity and recapture the passion and pride associated with the brand.

I absolutely love this car. The best driving car I have ever had. I only wish there was a place to put a trash bag. I’m used to having a gear shift to hang it from. Other then that awesome ride!!!

A very easy car to drive. Solid quality after 57k miles... The weakness of this car is the transmission. As with many other vehicles with a high number of gears for their automatic transmissions. Other than that, a near perfect car.

Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 6.5/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
The TLX is positioned as a performance luxury sedan, so you’re looking at a car that tries to balance driving appeal with premium ambition. The overview also frames it as part of Acura’s broader effort to rebuild its identity, which makes it appealing if you want a sedan with a more distinctive brand story.
That said, the market still shows 26.8% of listings as good or great deals, so you have room to shop carefully rather than rush.
Is the 2016 Acura TLX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview presents the TLX as a premium sedan that aims to blend sportiness and luxury, and the expert notes reinforce that it delivers a real bargain relative to similarly equipped rivals. The performance write-up also points to a smooth, powerful V6 and torque-vectoring SH-AWD as strengths when the car is driven hard.
The same expert feedback also flags brake fade under demanding conditions, so used buyers should pay close attention to braking feel, service history, and how the car has been driven over time. That makes a careful inspection especially important if you plan to keep the car long term.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Acura TLX?
At 52.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage affected structural, suspension, or safety systems. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on braking performance, tire wear, and signs of hard use, especially if the car has larger wheels or a sport-oriented setup. You should also check that the cabin electronics, climate controls, and driver-assistance features work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The TLX is available with a 4-cylinder or V6 engine, and the V6 SH-AWD version adds a more engaging driving character. The base setup is more value-focused, while the higher-spec version brings the stronger performance and more premium feel described in the expert notes.
- Powertrain: The car is offered with a 4-cylinder or a 290-hp V6, and the V6 SH-AWD setup adds torque-vectoring all-wheel drive and Agile Handling Assist. The expert also notes that the car can feel soft in normal driving, while the V6 version becomes much more rewarding when pushed.
- Safety package: The TLX includes sophisticated driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology, but the safety write-up also notes a Marginal result for small-overlap frontal protection and a Marginal result for LATCH ease of use. That makes trim and equipment verification especially important.
- Infotainment: The TLX does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, but it does include a dual-screen setup, Bluetooth, text and email reading, Aha and Pandora access, and Siri Eyes Free. The optional Technology Package adds navigation, voice recognition, a 10-speaker premium audio system, and AcuraLink subscription services.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 test car was rated at 25 mpg, and the expert recorded 22.8 mpg on a test loop.
Which 2016 Acura TLX trim should I buy?
The 2016 Acura TLX is offered in 2 trim levels: TLX 2.4, TLX 3.5 SH-AWD.
Here's the short version:
- TLX 2.4: This is the value-oriented choice if you want the lower entry price and a more accessible way into the TLX lineup. It suits you best if you care more about premium comfort and brand appeal than maximum performance.
- TLX 3.5 SH-AWD: This is the better-value trim if you want the TLX’s strongest personality, since the V6, torque-vectoring SH-AWD, and handling upgrades make it the more rewarding driver’s car. It’s the one to choose if you want the model’s performance-luxury promise to feel most complete.
The safety content also notes a Marginal result for small-overlap frontal protection and a Marginal result for LATCH ease of use, so verify safety equipment and condition carefully regardless of trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura TLX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 564 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,031.25, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura TLX's resale value?
The current average of $14,652 sits slightly above last year's $14,568.
That small increase suggests the TLX has held its value fairly steadily rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of stability can be helpful because it points to a market that is predictable and easier to price against.
The model’s strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand, especially among shoppers looking for a premium sedan with a value angle. If the car is well maintained and accident-free, it should remain easier to position competitively when you decide to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Acura TLX safe?
The TLX gets perfect five-star ratings across the board from NHTSA, but it also earns a Marginal rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for small-overlap frontal protection.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety write-up says Acura’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies generally operate with a high level of sophistication. It also notes a shortcoming in child-seat LATCH ease of use, which is worth checking if you plan to install a car seat regularly.
That mixed safety picture means you should pay close attention to crash history and safety-system condition when shopping used examples.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura TLX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Acura’s renewed design direction and brand repositioning are central to this year’s appeal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $13,582, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $14,652 average.
- It offers rewarding driving dynamics and a strong mix of modern entertainment and safety technology.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2016 if you want the steadier market, strong owner satisfaction, and a model year tied to Acura’s brand reset. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2015 is the better value play, especially if you find one in clean condition with the equipment you want.
