Why it stands out
The 2016 Acura TLX stands out as a performance luxury sedan that aims to balance driving appeal with premium ambition. Acura’s own positioning suggests that it is meant to deliver on both fronts, though the description also implies that doing so depends on added attention to detail. That makes the TLX distinctive as a car that tries to blend sportiness and luxury rather than leaning entirely toward one or the other.
It is also notable for what it represents for Acura more broadly. The summary frames the brand as being in a period of renewal, with leadership changes and a new design direction presented as hopeful first steps. In that context, the 2016 TLX is appealing to buyers who want a sedan tied to Acura’s effort to rebuild its identity and recapture the passion and pride associated with the brand.

I absolutely love this car. The best driving car I have ever had. I only wish there was a place to put a trash bag. I’m used to having a gear shift to hang it from. Other then that awesome ride!!!

A very easy car to drive. Solid quality after 57k miles... The weakness of this car is the transmission. As with many other vehicles with a high number of gears for their automatic transmissions. Other than that, a near perfect car.

Yes — the 2016 Acura TLX earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
The TLX is positioned as a performance luxury sedan, so you’re looking at a car that tries to blend driving appeal with premium ambition rather than leaning fully one way or the other. The overview also frames it as part of Acura’s broader brand reset, which may matter to you if you want a sedan tied to that effort to rebuild identity and enthusiasm.
There are 30.1% of listings priced as good or great deals, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Acura TLX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview presents the TLX as a car that aims to balance premium ambition with driving appeal, and the expert notes reinforce that it can feel refined and upscale inside. The performance write-up also points to a smooth and powerful V6 in the right configuration, which supports the idea that the car can deliver a satisfying ownership experience when properly chosen.
The same expert notes also flag brake fade under hard use, so used buyers should pay close attention to maintenance history and how the car was driven before you buy.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Acura TLX?
At 51.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has larger wheels, sport-oriented equipment, or signs of heavier use. Focus on brake condition, tire wear, and cabin electronics, since those are the kinds of areas where a used luxury sedan can show age or prior hard driving.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 4-cylinder trim starts the lineup, while the V6 version adds more power and a stronger performance focus. The cabin is described as upscale but dated in layout, so you should pay attention to whether the equipment level matches what you want.
- Powertrain: The TLX is offered with a 4-cylinder or V6 engine, and the V6 with SH-AWD brings torque-vectoring and stronger driving dynamics. The expert also notes that the car can feel soft and disconnected in normal driving, while the V6 setup is much more engaging.
- Safety package: The car includes sophisticated driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology, but the safety write-up also points to a Marginal result in small-overlap frontal protection and a Marginal LATCH rating. That makes trim and condition verification especially important.
- Infotainment: The TLX does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and it uses a dual-screen setup that the expert found confusing. The optional Technology Package adds navigation, voice recognition, a 10-speaker premium sound system, and AcuraLink subscription services.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 test car was rated at 25 mpg, and the expert recorded 22.8 mpg on a test loop.
Which 2016 Acura TLX trim should I buy?
The 2016 Acura TLX is offered in 2 trim levels: TLX 2.4 and TLX 3.5 SH-AWD.
Here's the short version:
- TLX 2.4: This is the more affordable entry point, and it makes the most sense if you want the TLX’s premium feel without paying for the V6 and SH-AWD hardware. It should suit you if value matters more than outright performance.
- TLX 3.5 SH-AWD: This is the better choice if you want the TLX to feel like the performance luxury sedan Acura is aiming for. The V6, torque-vectoring SH-AWD, and Agile Handling Assist make it the more rewarding version to drive, and it is the best-value pick if you care about the car’s dynamic side.
The safety content also notes that the TLX’s crash-protection results include a Marginal small-overlap frontal rating and a Marginal LATCH rating, so you should verify condition carefully regardless of trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura TLX?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 599 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 51.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,030.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura TLX's resale value?
The current average of $14,567 sits slightly above last year's $14,560.
That small increase suggests a stable pricing environment rather than a sharply weakening one. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, you’re starting from a market that has not shown major downward pressure. The TLX’s value proposition also benefits from its premium positioning, which can help support demand among shoppers looking for a lower-cost luxury sedan.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Acura TLX safe?
It gets five-star ratings across the board from NHTSA, but the IIHS gives it a Marginal rating for small-overlap frontal protection.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The TLX includes sophisticated driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology, but the safety write-up also highlights a Marginal result for child-seat LATCH ease of use. That means you should not assume every safety-related detail is equally strong just because the federal crash ratings are excellent.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura TLX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 TLX is positioned as a performance luxury sedan that blends premium ambition with driving appeal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $13,648, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $14,567 average.
- It offers rewarding driving dynamics and a long list of modern entertainment and safety technologies.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price stability, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the cleaner starting point. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the better value play, especially if you find one in strong condition with the equipment you want.
