Why it stands out
The 2016 Acura MDX stands out for putting safety, athleticism, and refinement at the center of its appeal. Those are the primary selling points called out for this model, and they help explain why it has long been positioned as a luxury SUV with a polished, upscale character.
For 2016, the MDX also gained a new 9-speed automatic transmission, which is one of the key updates tied to this model year. That change gives the SUV a more modern mechanical setup, though the source also notes that the improvement did not necessarily make the vehicle more appealing overall. Owner feedback reinforces the MDX’s strengths, with praise for its comfortable ride, effective safety features, overall performance, advanced features, and spacious interior. At the same time, some drivers have reported transmission shifting issues, which is worth keeping in mind for shoppers who value smooth operation above all else.

Yes a great value and w/ Acura watch this is totally incredible for a smaller suv. Having the Acura 4yr. Warranty w/50K miles. This has the 3.5 Fwd power everywhere and power outlets are all over as well. Leather is beautiful it’s got more buttons it can be overwhelming but it’s greatly appreciated.

I chose this specific trim (Elite model) for comfort and well… the wide screen entertainment system for my younger kids. For a 8 year old car it drives amazingly. I have driven Hondas, Toyotas Fords but this might be the best I have owned.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,625 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,447.79 |
| Year-Round High | $15,673.68 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,679 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.72% |
Prices have softened 6.72% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 994 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $14,447.79, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Acura MDX earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, effective safety features, and overall performance. They also highlight the advanced features and spacious interior, which makes this a strong fit if you want a family-friendly luxury SUV.
The MDX is positioned around safety, athleticism, and refinement, so it makes the most sense if you want a polished three-row SUV with upscale character. With 33.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels comfortable, dependable, and generally trouble-free over time, with many shoppers viewing it as a strong value for the money. The expert review also describes the MDX as having a quality feel that suggests it will last a good, long time.
The same review notes that Acura has historically built a strong reliability reputation, even while newer technology has complicated perceptions of quality. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the transmission and shifting behavior are acceptable before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Acura MDX?
At 62.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the transmission behaves smoothly in real-world driving.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The MDX is sold with packages rather than traditional trims, and the base setup is simpler than the better-equipped versions. The cabin uses a dual-display layout, and the more upscale option packages add a cleaner feature set and a more premium feel.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower, paired with a new 9-speed automatic transmission. SH-AWD is available, and the review notes that the transmission can feel less satisfying than the previous setup.
- Safety package: AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and road-departure mitigation. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert comes with the Technology or Advance Package.
- Infotainment: All models gain Siri Eyes Free compatibility. The Technology Package adds navigation with real-time traffic, a premium sound system with HD Radio, and a GPS-linked solar-sensing climate control system. The Entertainment Package adds a rear-seat entertainment system and a 110-volt power outlet, and the Advance Package expands the display to 16.2 inches.
- Fuel efficiency: The review says the EPA rates the SH-AWD model at 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With the Advance package and Idle Stop, those figures rise to 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.
Which 2016 Acura MDX trim should I buy?
The 2016 Acura MDX is offered in 1 trim level: MDX.
Here's the short version:
The MDX is really a package-driven SUV, so your best choice depends on how much equipment you want rather than on a long trim ladder. The Technology Package is the most natural value step if you want navigation, better audio, and more safety-related tech, while the Advance Package is for you if you want the most comfort and convenience features, including ventilated front seats and parking assistance sensors.
The safety package note is important: AcuraWatch Plus is available on any version of the MDX, but blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert requires the Technology or Advance Package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura MDX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 994 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.72% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,447.79, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura MDX's resale value?
The current average of $14,625 sits slightly below last year's $15,679.
That price movement suggests the MDX has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help if you buy now and plan to own it for a while. A softer market today can also make it easier for future sellers to stay competitive if the vehicle remains in good condition and has clean history.
The MDX’s strong owner satisfaction helps support demand, especially among shoppers looking for a comfortable, well-equipped family SUV. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX safe?
It earns five-star ratings from the federal government in every single assessment, accompanied by a four-star rollover resistance rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it top ratings across the board, plus an Advanced rating for frontal-impact collision avoidance, and the result is a Top Safety Pick rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and road-departure mitigation. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is included with the Technology or Advance Package, along with rain-sensing wipers.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.72% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 model year adds a new 9-speed automatic transmission and keeps the MDX centered on safety, athleticism, and refinement.
The bottom line: If you want a well-equipped luxury three-row SUV with strong safety credentials and broad owner approval, the 2016 MDX is a sensible target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can use the softer market and sizable inventory to focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than stretching for the first one you see.
