Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Generally — the 2015 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.43/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.

Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, comfortable seating, and strong reliability, and they also value its off-road capability and handy rear window. The overview points you toward a rugged SUV that prioritizes serious capability and utility over everyday polish, so it makes the most sense if you want a vehicle built for tougher use rather than family-hauling refinement.

32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback repeatedly highlights strong reliability, and owners also describe the 4Runner as dependable and long-lasting. The expert evaluation reinforces that theme by pointing to impressive reliability ratings and a vehicle that can go places other SUVs can’t. The cost-effectiveness notes also mention free maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership burden.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about durability and more about whether the vehicle has been used hard off-road or maintained inconsistently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?

At 55.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has seen trail use or heavy towing. Focus on signs of wear in the suspension, tires, underbody, and interior, since this model’s appeal often comes from harder use rather than gentle commuting. If you’re comparing multiple listings, condition should matter as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SR5 is the entry point and comes with rear-wheel drive, while the Trail adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable driving modes, crawl control, and Downhill Assist Control. The Limited shifts toward comfort with leather seats, ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, front and rear parking sensors, and Safety Connect.
• Powertrain: The 4Runner uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. It is described as adequate rather than exciting, and fuel economy is called dismal.
• Safety package: Every 4Runner gets a reversing camera, and 4WD models include Active Traction Control and Downhill Assist Control. Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited, and the model lacks several modern active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen, navigation, upgraded stereo speakers, and Entune App Suite smartphone connectivity. The Limited gets a larger 7-inch screen, and the system also offers predictive traffic and weather features plus USB 2.0 charging.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert evaluation says the EPA combined figure is 18 mpg, and real-world testing returned 16.8 mpg.

Which 2015 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 4 trim levels: SR5, Trail, TRD Pro, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the starting point, and it makes the most sense if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness at the lowest entry point. The downside is that it comes with rear-wheel drive, so you’ll want to pay close attention to whether the available 4WD setup and Premium Package are included on the listing you’re considering.
• Trail: This is the best-value choice if you want the 4Runner’s off-road hardware without jumping to the top of the range. Standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, crawl control, Multi-terrain Select, and KDSS make it the most trail-focused trim in the lineup.
• TRD Pro: This is the most specialized choice for hard-core off-road use. It adds TRD Bilstein high-performance shocks with rear remote reservoirs, TRD front springs, a TRD aluminum front skid plate, matte-black 17-inch wheels, and beefy off-road tires.
• Limited: This is the comfort-oriented pick. It adds leather, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a premium JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, parking sensors, and Safety Connect, so it suits you best if you want the most upscale 4Runner experience.

The Trail’s off-road equipment and KDSS make it the strongest all-around pick for buyers who want capability first, while the Limited is the trim to choose if comfort and convenience matter more.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?

The market looks moderate and selective, so you have room to shop, but the best listings still deserve quick attention.

• Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,072 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.11% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 55.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,379, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $21,686 sits slightly below last year's $22,154.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also suggests future sellers may need to be realistic about expectations. The 4Runner’s strong reputation for reliability and long-term durability should help support demand, especially among shoppers who specifically want a rugged SUV. Its value proposition is strongest when the vehicle has been well maintained and not overly worn from hard use.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2015 Toyota 4Runner earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Aside from a standard reversing camera, it offers few of the latest active safety features. Safety Connect is available only on the Limited, and the model lacks blind-spot monitoring. The safety evaluation also flags the SUV’s high center of gravity and notes concern about crash-test and rollover-resistance ratings, which is a meaningful caveat if safety is a top priority for you.

Should I buy a 2015 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2015 if:

• 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.11% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2015 TRD Pro is built for hard-core off-road enthusiasts and excels on rock-strewn paths.

Consider the 2014 if:

• At $20,417, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $21,686 average.
• It blends rugged capability with comfortable daily driving.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $23,932, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $21,686 average.
• It adds cell-phone navigation and more towing capacity.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of capability, owner satisfaction, and current market value, the 2015 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2014 can save you money while keeping the same rugged character. If you want a slightly newer version and don’t mind paying more, the 2016 is worth a look for its added convenience and towing upgrades.
