CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 1,326 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,145.00, 28.9% of 2015 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Subaru Outback 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
60.8% of 2015 Outback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Outback stands out by combining the utility buyers expect from a crossover SUV with a level of capability that can be hard to match in a wide range of driving situations. It was redesigned for 2015, and that update made it bigger and better than before while still keeping the package practical rather than cumbersome.
One of its defining traits is standard all-wheel drive, which gives it broad appeal for drivers who want extra confidence without giving up fuel economy. That balance is a major part of the Outback’s charm: it offers more than just everyday usefulness, yet it does so in a way that does not penalize buyers at the pump. Owners also tend to appreciate its solid ride, luxurious feel, impressive safety features, and ample cargo space. A possible drawback is that some shoppers may miss built-in navigation, but for many buyers the Outback’s mix of capability, comfort, and efficiency is the bigger story.

Reviewed a 2015 Subaru 3.6R Limited on Jul 4, 2025
My mother recently purchased a brand new Outback in 2023 and from the drives I’ve taken in it, all of the safety features and the body style, center of gravity and comfort led me to look for used Outbacks for my next purchase. I was not disappointed in the 2015 and I will have a hard time wanting to sit in any other car without a 6-cylinder engine. The Limited trim is perfectly comfortable: the same EyeSight features and safety focuses accomplish the same as a brand new year model but with a touch of “retro” flair in the (arguably dated but, I don’t mind) screen, the accent lighting in the cab and less is more approach of the interiors.

The Subaru Outback 3.6R is the absolute best iteration of the Outback. Test driven model years 2013, 2015 & 2019 and the Outback just gets better and better. If you can find a 3.6R Limited trim level, be quick to snatch it up before I do -- LOL! I truly believe this wagon is worth every penny.

2015 Subaru Outback Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2015 Subaru Outback prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2015 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,117 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,625.25 |
| Year-Round High | $11,856.86 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,788 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.69% |
Prices have softened 5.69% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,350 listings available, which suggests you should have some room to compare prices and conditions. If you find a listing below $10,625.25, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — with a 4.86/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating, this model year lands strongly with both owners and reviewers.
The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise the solid ride, luxurious feel, ample cargo space, and fuel efficiency, especially with the all-wheel drive system. The Outback’s redesigned-for-2015 packaging also fits buyers who want crossover utility without giving up everyday practicality. In market terms, 27.7% of listings are marked as good or great deals, which gives you a decent chance to find a compelling example.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, trouble-free, and easy to count on, with praise centered on its solid ride and all-weather confidence. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Outback offers broad capability in a package that doesn’t penalize buyers in terms of fuel economy. Subaru’s maintenance perk language is not present here, so your best protection is a careful pre-purchase inspection and a clean service history. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is buying a neglected example with hidden wear or prior damage.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Outback?
At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Focus on condition over mileage alone, since accident history can affect long-term ownership satisfaction and resale value. If a listing has incomplete records or visible inconsistencies, move on unless the price clearly compensates for the risk.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model includes a rear-view camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a touchscreen interface for climate and audio, and a roof rack with crossbars, while higher trims add features such as heated seats, fog lamps, a power liftgate, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, lane-change assist, and Xenon headlamps.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder delivers 175 hp through a CVT and is described as adequate rather than quick, while the available 3.6-liter six-cylinder is more powerful but less efficient.
- Safety package: EyeSight is available on Premium and Limited trims and adds warning, automatic braking, and adaptive cruise control functions; the Rear Vehicle Detection System is optional on Premium models and standard on Limited models.
- Infotainment: Starlink includes Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, music streaming, mobile apps, and CD playback; the navigation system uses a 7-inch touchscreen with swipe and pinch controls.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 28 mpg combined, though real-world testing returned 23.7 mpg.
Which 2015 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2015 Subaru Outback is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The 2.5i gives you the essentials, but you give up the richer comfort and safety upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The 2.5i Premium is the best value if you want heated front seats, alloy wheels, and a stronger comfort upgrade without going all the way to the top.
- Premium/top trim: The 2.5i Limited is the most appealing all-around choice if you want the full safety and convenience mix, including blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, lane-change assist, heated rear seats, and a power liftgate.
- Off-road trim: The 3.6R Limited is the choice for stronger acceleration, but its added power comes with lower efficiency, which may matter more in daily driving.
EyeSight is optional on Premium and Limited trims, and the Rear Vehicle Detection System is optional on Premium but standard on Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Subaru Outback?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so selective shoppers should be able to find a decent example without rushing.
- Deal availability: 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,350 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.69% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,625.25, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $11,117 sits slightly below last year's $11,788.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means your upside may depend more on condition, trim choice, and documentation than on broad market appreciation. Well-kept examples should still hold appeal because the model’s mix of practicality and all-wheel-drive capability remains a strong draw.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2015 Subaru Outback earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, and versions equipped with EyeSight technology receive a Top Safety Pick+ rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is Subaru’s driver-assistance suite here, and it uses two cameras to monitor the road ahead, warn you about danger, and apply braking if needed. The Rear Vehicle Detection System adds blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist, and it is standard on Limited models while optional on Premium trims. The main caveat is that the strongest safety package is not universal across the lineup, so you should confirm exactly which systems are fitted on any used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Redesigned for 2015, it is bigger and better than before while keeping the package practical.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,738, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $11,117 average.
- It emphasizes spaciousness, comfort, and fuel efficiency for active families.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2015 is the stronger buy because pricing has softened and inventory is available. If you can spend more and want the next year’s broader comfort-focused appeal, the 2016 is the cleaner alternative for price-insensitive shoppers.
