What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Outback?

At 60.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the car’s equipment and safety systems are functioning as expected. Because this model is often bought for its practicality and all-weather usefulness, a clean, well-kept example matters more than a bargain with hidden issues.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2.5i includes a rear-view camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a touchscreen interface for the climate control and audio systems, and a roof rack with crossbars, while the 2.5i Premium adds 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, fog lamps, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The 2.5i Limited adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, heated rear seats, active fog lights, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, and lane-change assist, making it the best-value choice if you want the most useful equipment. The 3.6R Limited adds a 6-cylinder engine and Xenon headlamps.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 175 hp and uses a CVT, while the available 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine brings more power but less efficiency. The expert evaluation says the base engine is only acceptable for power and can feel anemic in mid-range response, so you should pay attention to how the car accelerates in real-world driving.
• Safety package: EyeSight is available on Premium and Limited trims and uses two windshield-mounted cameras to monitor the road ahead, warn you about danger, and brake the car to a full stop if needed. The Rear Vehicle Detection System is optional on Premium models and standard on Limited models, and it includes blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist. That means lower trims miss some of the most useful driver-assistance features.
• Infotainment: The Starlink system includes Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, hands-free calling, music streaming, and mobile apps, and the available navigation system uses a 7-inch touchscreen. The interface is described as simple and easy to learn, and the system supports touchscreen navigation controls.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert evaluation says the Outback returned 23.7 mpg during testing, compared with an EPA rating of 28 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2015 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2015 Subaru Outback is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5i: This is the least expensive way into the Outback, and it already gives you a rear-view camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a touchscreen interface for climate and audio, and a roof rack with crossbars. It makes sense if you want the core Outback formula and can live without the extra comfort and safety features.
• 2.5i Premium: This trim adds heated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, fog lamps, alloy wheels, and dual-zone automatic climate control. It’s the trim that most clearly balances price and everyday comfort, so it’s the best-value pick for many shoppers.
• 2.5i Limited: This is the most appealing choice if you want the strongest mix of comfort and safety equipment, since it adds heated rear seats, a power liftgate, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, lane-change assist, and active fog lights. It also unlocks EyeSight and the Rear Vehicle Detection System, which are major advantages for used buyers.
• 3.6R Limited: Choose this if you want the 6-cylinder engine and the extra equipment that comes with the Limited trim. It’s the right fit if stronger acceleration matters more to you than fuel economy.

EyeSight is optional on Premium and Limited trims, and the Rear Vehicle Detection System is optional on Premium but standard on Limited.

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,369 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.77% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,621, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2015 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $10,709 sits slightly below last year's $11,611.

That decline suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. The current range still shows healthy demand, especially for cleaner examples with strong equipment and a good history. If you maintain the car well and keep the records organized, you’ll be in a better position to protect value when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2015 Subaru Outback safe?

The 2015 Subaru Outback earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, and versions equipped with EyeSight technology receive a Top Safety Pick+ rating.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses two windshield-mounted cameras to watch the road ahead, warn you about danger, and apply the brakes if needed. The Rear Vehicle Detection System adds blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist, and it is optional on Premium models and standard on Limited models. The main safety caveat is that some of the most useful active-safety features are not standard on every trim.

Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2015 if:

• 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.77% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Redesigned for 2015, the Outback is bigger and better than ever before.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $12,400, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $10,709 average.
• It’s built for active use and outdoor trips.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2015 is the smarter starting point because prices have eased and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to spend more for the next model year, the 2016 is the better path for buyers who prioritize its updated appeal and don’t mind paying above the current-year average. For price-sensitive shoppers, the 2015 remains the more compelling buy.
