CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Subaru Legacy
overall

Summary
With 508 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,529, 28.9% of 2015 Subaru Legacies for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Subaru Legacy 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
59.3% of 2015 Legacy models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Legacy stands out as a redesigned sedan that is bigger, better looking, and more generously appointed than before. Its styling is described as vanilla-flavored, but the tradeoff is a larger interior and nicer accommodations, which make it feel more substantial and more comfortable for everyday use. That combination gives the car a more mainstream appeal while still keeping the Legacy’s practical character intact.
At the same time, the 2015 Legacy is presented as a car that may have lost a little of the enthusiast edge that once defined it. The test-drive summary suggests that something has been lost in the translation, even as the car’s overall package improves. Owner feedback reinforces the Legacy’s strengths in safety, reliability, and performance in various weather conditions, along with smooth power delivery and a strong sound system. A few drivers did note that acceleration can feel lacking compared with other cars, so the Legacy’s appeal is strongest for buyers who value comfort, confidence, and all-around usability over outright speed.

This was our 3rd legacy. Wonderful car! Great in inclement weather. The legacy kept us safe and unharmed in an accident. Would recommend to anyone wanting a safe, reliable car with some nice features at a fair price.

Reviewed a 2015 Subaru 2.5i AWD on Oct 2, 2014
I just purchased the 2015 Legacy 2.5i with black cloth interior, winter package and a dealer package. The reviews say it looks plain but I love its classic looks. I test drove the 2015 impreza (sucks), seen the sti and wrx (ugly) and decided on the legacy which is much roomier, quiet, and better looking. Theres more power and better mileage than the 2013-2014 model too! Not to mention decreased cabin noise. after 2,000 miles im still loving it.

Is the 2015 Subaru Legacy a good car?
Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
You also get a clear fit for everyday use: the Legacy is described as bigger, better looking, and more generously appointed than before, with a larger interior and nicer accommodations. Owners consistently praise its safety, reliability, smooth power delivery, and strong sound system, which lines up well with its practical, comfort-first character.
At the same time, the car’s appeal is strongest if you value confidence and usability over outright speed, since some drivers note that acceleration can feel lacking.
The market also looks reasonably healthy, with 31.0% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2015 Subaru Legacy reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners also describe the Legacy as reliable, with feedback pointing to minimal maintenance needs even at high mileage and a car you can count on in varied weather. The expert review adds that Subaru’s reputation for dependability is reinforced by a historically favorable cost of ownership outlook, and it notes that both Consumer Reports and J.D. Power expect this model to serve owners well over time.
Subaru also frames the car as a cost-effective ownership choice, which supports the case for long-term use if you keep up with routine maintenance.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the car’s basic durability and more about finding one that has been cared for properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Legacy?
At 59% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or visible wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the equipment on the car matches the trim you expect. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example is often worth paying a little more for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base 2.5i models include a full suite of power accessories, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, a rear-view camera, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and smartphone integration, while the 2.5i Premium adds aluminum wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and voice-command features. The 2.5i Limited adds leather upholstery, heated rear seats, a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, while the 3.6R Limited adds a more powerful 6-cylinder engine and Xenon headlamps. The best-value trim is the 2.5i Premium if you want a stronger feature set without moving all the way up the range.
- Powertrain: The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 175 hp, and Subaru’s boxer layout helps lower the center of gravity for stability. The standard Lineartronic CVT includes a 6-speed manual mode and paddle shifters, but the review notes that the car is not especially quick.
- Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight system includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on Limited models and optional on Premium models.
- Infotainment: Starlink uses a 7-inch color touchscreen and includes Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming, HD Radio, satellite radio, and Internet radio apps. It also supports a navigation system, and the interface is described as responsive and easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter powertrain is rated at 26 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined, though the test vehicle returned 23.4 mpg in mixed driving.
Which 2015 Subaru Legacy trim should I buy?
The 2015 Subaru Legacy is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Legacy experience with power accessories, a rear-view camera, Bluetooth, smartphone integration, and standard AWD. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and can live without the extra comfort and convenience features.
- 2.5i Premium: This trim adds aluminum wheels, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and an 8-way power driver’s seat, which makes it the best-value choice for many shoppers. It gives you the biggest step up in everyday comfort without jumping to the top of the range.
- 2.5i Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the most complete four-cylinder setup, with leather, heated rear seats, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and the Harman Kardon audio system. It suits you best if you want a more upscale cabin and more safety tech.
- 3.6R Limited: Choose this if you want the 6-cylinder engine and the added equipment that comes with the top powertrain. It’s the right pick if you care more about stronger performance than maximizing value.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on Limited models and optional on Premium models.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Subaru Legacy?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 507 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,089, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Subaru Legacy's resale value?
The current average of $10,518 sits slightly below last year's $10,595.
That small decline suggests the market has been fairly stable rather than volatile, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price pattern can make it easier to estimate your future trade-in or private-party value without worrying about sharp swings.
The Legacy’s broad appeal also helps support resale, especially for shoppers who want all-weather confidence, comfort, and a strong safety reputation.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Subaru Legacy safe?
The 2015 Subaru Legacy earns Top Safety Pick recognition from the IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru’s EyeSight suite includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane-departure warning, and it was upgraded for 2015 with new cameras and smoother operation. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are available on Premium models and standard on Limited models, so you may need to move up a trim if you want those features.
The main caveat is that NHTSA testing had not yet been completed in the review material, so the crash-test picture is not fully rounded out there.
Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Subaru’s redesigned cabin is bigger and more generously appointed, which makes this year especially appealing if you want comfort and practicality.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $8,790, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $10,518 average.
- It is a practical family sedan that emphasizes substance, comfort, safety, and winter-friendly confidence.
The bottom line: If you want the more refined and better-equipped version of the Legacy, the 2015 is the stronger all-around pick. If your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable giving up some of the newer design and equipment improvements, the 2014 is the better value play.
