CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Toyota Prius

Summary
With 734 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,823.00, 31.5% of 2014 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Toyota Prius 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Toyota Prius stands out as a practical hybrid that built its reputation on efficiency and reliability. By this point in the Prius story, Toyota had already made the model synonymous with fuel-saving hybrid technology, and the car’s appeal was rooted in the same formula that made it a favorite with eco-conscious drivers and urban commuters: strong fuel economy, low emissions, and everyday usability. It also carried the Prius name’s distinctive design, which helped it remain instantly recognizable on the road.
What makes the 2014 Toyota Prius especially appealing is the balance it strikes between thrift and usefulness. The Prius line was known for being practical and reliable, with usable rear seats and a good amount of cargo space, and owner feedback for this model year often echoes that with praise for its comfort, spaciousness, and value for money. That said, it is not a car that wins on excitement, and some owners note that road and wind noise can be noticeable, especially on the freeway, while others feel it can seem small for larger groups. Even so, for buyers who want a dependable hybrid with a strong reputation and excellent gas mileage, the 2014 Prius remains distinctive for doing exactly what it was designed to do.

The car is great. Awesome MGPs. I love the way I fit in the cockpit, it feels like I'm driving a spaceship. Driving is super smooth. I wish I had a backup cam because it's difficult to see out of the back window. Decent turn radius. Extra hidden storage tray in the trunk. You can pull back on the joystick to slow down without wearing out the brakes. There is a filter button for when you are driving through a stinky area. Even though it is a higher tech car I still feel like I can work on it without have to buy a bunch of unique tools. Now I just need to figure out how to maximize the MPGs by driving slower. Even with my lead foot I average 41 MPG.

The car’s features are all that I wanted. I think it was an excellent value. The car is missing absolutely nothing. I would compare it to a brand new Prius.

While there is road/wind noise on the freeway, it's not as pronounced in the liftback as it is in the prius c. The longer wheelbase and heavier weight also helps to subdue the bumps/vibrations on the road compared to the c. Lots of trunk space, and if you need more, the back seats fold down for extra room. There's plenty of room for passengers too, though three grown adults in the back may be cramped. Three kids should be fine however. Great fuel economy, you can easily get more than 50 mpg in this car unless you drive very fast, like 75 mph or more, or use it for very short trips that take less than 15 minutes..

Is the 2014 Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise its great gas mileage, comfort, spaciousness, and value for money. That makes it a strong fit if you want a practical hybrid for commuting or delivery work, especially if you care more about efficiency and everyday usefulness than driving excitement. The same feedback also suggests it works best for buyers who want a dependable, low-drama car that handles routine driving well.
30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback repeatedly highlights reliability, along with value for money and trouble-free everyday use. That kind of praise matters most if you plan to keep the car for a while, because it suggests the Prius has earned trust from people who rely on it for commuting and daily driving. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about finding one that has been maintained well.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota Prius?
At 53.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection and pay close attention to overall condition, since accident history can affect both reliability and resale value. Focus especially on signs of uneven wear, repair quality, and whether the car has been maintained consistently.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota Prius?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 764 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.79% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,951.73, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $10,823 sits slightly below last year's $11,020.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale gains may be limited unless you choose a particularly clean, well-kept example. If you plan to sell later, condition and maintenance history will matter a lot, because buyers in this segment tend to reward cars that look and feel dependable. A Prius with strong ownership appeal should still attract steady interest, especially from shoppers focused on fuel savings.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.79% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $12,621, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $10,823 average.
- It adds a smoother, more polished daily-driving feel.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2014 is the stronger starting point because pricing has eased and owner satisfaction is excellent. If you can stretch for a newer example and want to compare against a higher-priced alternative, the 2015 is worth a look, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2014 and shop for a clean, well-priced listing.
