The 2014 Toyota 4Runner is known for its rugged design, off-road capability, and spacious interior, making it a versatile choice for adventure seekers.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Toyota 4Runner remains a standout in the SUV market due to its traditional body-on-frame construction, which offers superior durability and off-road capability compared to many modern crossovers. The 4Runner's design is both aggressive and functional, featuring ample cargo space and a high driving position that enhances visibility. Great vehicle overall. Very solid drivetrain. I wouldn’t compare it to much. I own a 2006 with 320k and running strong.

I love this car, i've just decided i need something a little smaller for my family. We had plenty of space on our family vacation and got great gas mileage on the highway (24MPG). Only thing i wish it had was a power lift gate.

It’s a comfortable vehicle. I like all the features it comes with. It rides smoothly. I’m so happy with the heated seats. I don’t care for the moonroof but it wasn’t a feature that made me not want to buy this model.

See more price trendsHow much does the 2014 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,792 |

| Year-Round High | $21,843.22 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,843 |

Prices have softened 4.81% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 634 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $19,592.97, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Toyota 4Runner earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Technology.
The data points to a rugged, body-on-frame SUV with strong off-road capability, a high driving position, and useful cargo space. It also stands out for its traditional construction and practical layout, even if the interior controls are less intuitive than you might want.
For you, that means the 4Runner makes the most sense if you value durability, visibility, and adventure-ready utility over crossover-like polish. 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 4Runner’s body-on-frame construction and rugged design support its reputation for durability, and the expert notes reinforce that it is built for hard use rather than delicate commuting. Its traditional SUV setup also suggests a vehicle that can handle demanding ownership better than many softer crossovers.
If you buy used, your biggest long-term risk is choosing a truck that has been used hard off-road or poorly maintained, so condition and service history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner?
At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has been used for trail driving or towing. Focus on signs of underbody wear, suspension abuse, and any evidence that the vehicle has seen harder-than-average use. Because this model is built for rugged duty, condition matters as much as mileage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 starts with 17-inch alloy wheels, a multi-information display, leather-trimmed steering wheel controls, and standard Bluetooth hands-free phone operation. The Trail adds off-road crawl control and increased ground clearance, while the Limited adds 20-inch wheels, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, and more upscale touches.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is available on the SR5, 4-wheel drive is standard on the Trail, and the Limited uses full-time 4-wheel drive with Active Traction Control.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock braking, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
- Infotainment: Bluetooth hands-free calling with voice commands is standard. A 6.1-inch touchscreen is optional on the Trail and standard on the Trail Premium sub-trim, along with iPod/aux connectivity, HD radio, and an integrated backup camera. Entune App Suite is not included on the base Trail.
- Fuel efficiency: The SR5 RWD returns 17 mpg city and 22 highway, while 4WD versions return 17/21. The Trail’s off-road focus can come with a tradeoff in everyday efficiency and road comfort.
Which 2014 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2014 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 3 trim levels: SR5, Trail, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 is the starting point, but it lacks the Trail’s off-road crawl control and raised ground clearance, as well as the Limited’s upscale comfort and parking sensors.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Trail is the best fit if you want the 4Runner’s core rugged character, because it adds crawl control and extra clearance without moving all the way to the pricier luxury-oriented trim.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most road-friendly choice, with full-time 4WD, Active Traction Control, dual-zone climate control, parking sensors, and a smoother ride for everyday use.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core protection features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 634 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.81% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,592.97, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $20,792 sits slightly below last year's $21,843.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted downward from prior levels. For a future seller, that means your exit price will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been cared for.
The 4Runner’s rugged reputation and loyal following should help support demand over time, especially if you keep it clean and well maintained. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The 4Runner comes standard with Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock braking, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system. That gives you a solid baseline of active and passive protection for a truck-based SUV.
The expert notes also point to strong visibility and rugged construction, which can help confidence behind the wheel. The main caveat is that this is a traditional, high-riding SUV, so you should expect a different driving feel than you would get from a crossover.
Should I buy a 2014 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.81% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines rugged body-on-frame construction with strong off-road capability and a high driving position.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $22,107, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $20,792 average.
- It adds more off-road tech and a power rear window.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2014 is the stronger buy because pricing has eased and the model still delivers the rugged capability that defines the 4Runner. If you are willing to spend more for a newer example with added features, the 2015 is the cleaner upgrade path.
