CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 1,875 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,335, 29.6% of 2014 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Ford Explorer 4.5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Ford Explorer stands out as a family-oriented midsize SUV that blends comfort, space, and a more car-like driving feel than the older truck-based Explorers. It was part of the fifth generation, which moved the Explorer onto Ford’s D4 platform and helped turn it into a crossover-style SUV. That shift gave it a more familiar, everyday character while still keeping the Explorer’s practical appeal. For buyers, the 2014 model also benefits from the generation’s updated styling and in-car tech, which helped keep it competitive in a crowded segment.
This generation offered a range of powertrains, including a 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 in 2011, a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder that improved combined fuel economy to 23 mpg, and later a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 twin-turbo. It also brought modern infotainment systems, and buyers could add features such as heated and ventilated front seats, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and other luxuries. Safety equipment was a strong point too, with available BLIS blind spot information system, forward-collision warning with emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active parking assist, and rain-sensing wipers.
At the same time, the 2014 Ford Explorer is not without drawbacks. The fifth-generation model rarely ranked at the top of its class in any one area, and its reliability record was described as average or below average. It also wasn’t as efficient as some rivals, and it didn’t match the space or luxury of some competitors. Even so, it remains appealing for shoppers who want a well-equipped, versatile SUV with broad capability and a strong mix of comfort and features.

The Ford Explorer is the best vehicle I have ever owned . I like to buy american also looked at the Lincoln MKX which was noisy in comparison . I believe Lincoln has become an over priced Ford . Go with the Explorer if you are looking for an SUV

Reviewed a 2014 Ford Sport 4WD on Jan 12, 2015
After driving the new Ford Explorer sport for the first time about six months ago, it has to be the best SUV on the market. The performance of the 3.5L twin turbo 365 HP engine is second to none. The cab is nicely appointed, very comfortable and outside sound is minimal. The styling is low and lean and with the all black grill the overall appeal is outstanding. At 16MPG city, the gas mileage could be improved a bit, but you have to give up MPG for that kind of HP. This SUV is great to drive as you feel sturdy and solid in it, yet the nimble steering and responsive suspension make you feel in complete control. It will get wherever you want to go as fast as you want to go there, but keeps you in control and can also get you out of any situation needed.

How much does the 2014 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,337 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,319 |
| Year-Round High | $10,066 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,065 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.23% |
Prices have softened 7.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,855 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2014 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners commonly praise its comfort, space, and performance, and they also call out its stylish design and value for money. For you, that makes it a sensible fit if you want a family-oriented midsize SUV with a practical, well-equipped feel. With 30.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to a dependable everyday experience for many shoppers, with comfort and performance coming through as recurring strengths. At the same time, some owners mention maintenance costs and concerns with specific high-mileage models, so you should expect ownership costs to vary by condition and service history. For used buyers, that means the biggest long-term risk is choosing a poorly maintained example rather than the model itself.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Ford Explorer?
At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage listings where wear and maintenance gaps matter more. Focus on overall condition, service records, and signs of deferred upkeep, since those factors will matter more than cosmetic appeal alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,855 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,319, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $9,337 sits slightly below last year's $10,065.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. If you keep the SUV clean, documented, and mechanically sound, you’ll be in a better position when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want a well-equipped, family-friendly Explorer and you’re comfortable shopping carefully, the 2014 is a reasonable primary choice because it combines broad availability, softer pricing, and solid owner satisfaction. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, you can also consider nearby years and compare condition, accident history, and asking price closely before deciding.
