CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 104 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,370, 22.1% of 2014 Ford Explorer listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Ford Explorer 4.5 / 5 stars.
73.1% of 2014 Ford Explorer listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Ford Explorer stands out as a midsize SUV that had already moved well beyond its truck-based roots by this point, and that shift gave it a more family-friendly, crossover-like character. It was part of the fifth generation, which used Ford’s D4 platform and made the Explorer feel more like a front-wheel drive sedan in most cases, with all-wheel drive available as a side benefit. That setup helped turn it into a more car-like SUV than earlier Explorers, while still keeping the roomy, practical appeal that has long defined the nameplate.
For 2014, Ford refreshed the Explorer’s styling and in-car tech, which helped keep it competitive. This generation also brought modern infotainment systems, and buyers could add features such as heated and ventilated front seats, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and other luxuries. Safety equipment was also a strength, with dual front airbags, dual front-seat side-impact airbags, dual rear safety belt airbags, and side curtain protection, plus optional features such as blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning with emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and active parking assist. That mix of comfort, technology, and available safety gear makes the 2014 Explorer appealing to shoppers who want a well-equipped used SUV.
At the same time, it is not without drawbacks. The fifth-generation Explorer rarely ranked at the top of its class in any one area, and its reliability record was only average or below average. The source also notes that 2011 through 2013 models fare especially poorly, which helps explain why later years like 2014 are generally the ones to seek out within this generation. Owners often praise the 2014 Explorer for its comfort, space, performance, and styling, but some also point to maintenance costs and limited room for larger passengers.

The Ford Explorer is the best vehicle I have ever owned . I like to buy american also looked at the Lincoln MKX which was noisy in comparison . I believe Lincoln has become an over priced Ford . Go with the Explorer if you are looking for an SUV

Reviewed a 2014 Ford Sport 4WD on Jan 12, 2015
After driving the new Ford Explorer sport for the first time about six months ago, it has to be the best SUV on the market. The performance of the 3.5L twin turbo 365 HP engine is second to none. The cab is nicely appointed, very comfortable and outside sound is minimal. The styling is low and lean and with the all black grill the overall appeal is outstanding. At 16MPG city, the gas mileage could be improved a bit, but you have to give up MPG for that kind of HP. This SUV is great to drive as you feel sturdy and solid in it, yet the nimble steering and responsive suspension make you feel in complete control. It will get wherever you want to go as fast as you want to go there, but keeps you in control and can also get you out of any situation needed.

How much does the 2014 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,170 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,170 |
| Year-Round High | $9,807 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $9,792 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.35% |
Prices have softened 6.35% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,832 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing options.
Is the 2014 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Ford Explorer earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its comfort, space, and performance, and they also like its stylish design and value for money. That makes it a good fit if you want a family-friendly midsize SUV with a roomy cabin and a more car-like driving character. With 28.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive price.
Is the 2014 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that many drivers find dependable in everyday use, especially when it comes to comfort and performance. At the same time, some owners mention maintenance costs and concerns with specific high-mileage examples, so condition matters a lot on the used market. For long-term ownership, you should be especially careful about service history and how the vehicle was maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Ford Explorer?
At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and service history before you go any further. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the vehicle has higher mileage or signs of heavy family use. Focus on overall condition, maintenance documentation, and any evidence of deferred repairs, since those factors matter more than a simple clean appearance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,832 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.35% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,170, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $9,170 sits slightly below last year's $9,792.
That price movement suggests the market has softened, which can limit upside if you plan to sell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the vehicle in good condition, you may be able to offset some of that depreciation. Strong maintenance records and clean history will matter more if you want to protect value later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.35% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2014 is a smart primary choice if you want a well-liked Explorer with strong owner satisfaction, decent deal availability, and a softer price trend. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-documented example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price.
