2004 Jaguar XJ-Series XJ8 Review
by Malcolm

Buy one and buy one now!

Finally got an XJ! 4.2 V8, but the aluminium body makes it no heavier on fuel than my previous 3.0 V6 X Type. Hit the sport button and this car really shifts. Big and comfy, superb handling. It's a big car but it somehow shrinks around you when you drive it. I'm in love!

Avg. Dealer Rating: (17 reviews) "I found a rare, low mileage Saab 93 XWD on Lauer Brothers via the CarGurus website. I live in Michigan but for the right car, I was willing to travel. Over the course of several days, I had phone conversations with both Jeff and his son, Owen, and I exchanged multiple text messages with Owen about the condition of the car. Jeff disclosed that the car had one area of damage (a two inch tear/hole) in the rear bumper but otherwise described the car as in "great" condition (it is not in great condition as the car has at least a dozen scratches, the paint is scraped off the front spoiler where it has hit the pavement, and the rear window seal/weather stripping has dry-rotted and most of it has fallen out). Owen sent me additional pictures and a video with the car running, per my request. Communication was good and I believed that I was getting honest information. I asked if there was any additional damage and was told there was not. I was told that the car had been well-cared for and the finish was in great condition. I asked if everything was working on the car and I was told that it was. I agreed to purchase the vehicle at their asking price on a Friday and made plans to rent a car and drive the 9 hours from Michigan to Dover the following day. Jeff agreed to meet me at the dealership Sunday morning for the transaction. I was excited about the car I thought I was buying. I arrived at the dealership Sunday morning before Jeff and inspected the vehicle, as it was sitting on the lot. I quickly discovered that the vehicle had body panel damage on the right rear quarter panel. There was a dent and the paint was damaged and had been covered up with touch-up paint. There were multiple scratches near the dent where something had hit the car. Rust was visible at the site of the damage and I know that once rust begins, it will spread and eventual rust through. When Jeff arrived, I showed him the damage that he had not disclosed and he stated that he was unware of it. However, rather than apologizing and offering to reduce the price due to this "unknown" damage, he said, "You don't have to buy it if you don't want. I have a couple from Connecticut who want the car." I suspect that he assumed that after driving 9 hours for the car, I would not go home empty handed. Unsure of what to do, I asked to take the car for a drive to evaluate it's mechanical condition. Shortly after pulling out of the dealer's lot, I attempted to open the sunroof and discovered that it would not open. I promptly returned to the dealer and informed Jeff that the sunroof would not open. He tried to open it as well and it would not open. He stated, "It was working before as far as I know." With these two major issues, my decision was easy. I walked away from the sale and drove my rental car home to Michigan, angry that Jeff and Owen had misrepresented the condition of the car and disappointed that I did not have a car that I was excited about owning. After returning home, I emailed Jeff to express that I felt angry that he had not disclosed two significant problems with the car and I made it clear that, had I known about either or those problems, I would not have agreed to purchase the car and therefore not made the 18 hour round trip to Dover, incurring $500 in travel expenses. I expressed my hope that he wanted to do something to make the situation right and if so, covering 1/2 of my travel expenses would satisfy me. He responded that he felt no obligation to pay for my travel expenses as "you made the decision to travel all this way, not me." He also downplayed the quarter panel damage as a "door ding" that is to be expected on a used vehicle. I am left with the belief that Jeff cares only about moving vehicles and making money and that his customers are not a high priority to him. I am also left to believe that either 1) he is a dishonest used car salesman or 2)he does not know the condition of a vehicle that has been in his possession for more than 6 months. Either way, he is a risky individual from whom to buy a car. If you find a car you want on his lot, do your research on the car and inspect it very closely. Don't trust Jeff and Owen to give you accurate information. And do not buy a car from Lauer Brothers sight unseen! "
