In its second year on the market, the 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac continued to attract buyers who were looking for the comfort of a midsize SUV combined with the versatility and cargo capacity of a pickup truck.
One trim style was offered for the '02 Explorer Sport Trac, but Premium and Choice options packages allowed drivers to upgrade their rides efficiently. The entry-level Value package came with 5-speed manual transmission, but it nonetheless offered some features like power door locks and windows, anti-lock brakes, and an integrated CD stereo system. The Premium and Choice packages brought upgrades to interior comfort and features, as well as automatic transmission. Buyers also had a choice between rear-wheel and four-wheel drive.
The 2002 Explorer Sport Trac filled a new market niche, dubbed by Ford the "sport utility truck". Although the hybrid design wasn't for everyone, it definitely struck a chord with plenty of buyers.
Only one engine choice was available with the '02 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, a 4.6 liter single overhead cam V6 that put out 203 horsepower and 237 lb.-ft. of torque. That may not seem like a lot for a vehicle with a 125.9-inch wheelbase, but drivers seem to feel that the Sport Trac has plenty of power. Optional bed extenders are available enhance the pickup's cargo capacity, and the Sport Trac has found a real niche as a job-site workhorse.
Gas mileage wasn't too scary; rated at 16 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, the Sport Trac was less of a guzzler than a lot of other sport utility vehicles on the market.
4.5 Overall rating
(25 reviews)I love this car, it has a sporty look on the inside, automatic windows, and the back window goes down which was awesome, great breaking system, nice height. 4 wheel drive so you can go anywhere. Good for a hauling around family and friends. Lots of room in the back seats for tall people.
Everything about this truck is family friendly, very roomy, economical, easy to drive, comfortable for long trips, sporty features, plus the ability to use as any standard truck. I would recommend this truck to anyone. It has exceeded my expectations and I've put 50k miles on it.
Well, I bought this vehicle used, obviously and have had no real issues or problems with it. Only thing was after I bought it I had it stored away for 6 months, hidden as a surprise Christmas present, then a week after we started driving it the 4 wheel drive module went out (bad sensor) but since I had insured it through CARFAX at the time of the CARFAX investigation and inspection, the repairs were covered in the warranty and we haven't had any other problems with it. I had hoped for a slightly better fuel mileage then my wife and daughter seem to get with it but then it is 4 wheel drive and we drive on almost all rural rock roads, very little actual paved highway driving. As always, the Ford seems to be built tougher and holds up better with out falling apart or rattling to pieces, when used in off highway locales. I was especially pleased with all the nice ammenities and options on the 2002 model I was able to find; leather seats, power mooon/sun roof, premium sound system, heated seat for winter time, etc. It is an all around great handling and riding vehicle. Wish I had it with me over in Thailand too or could find one like it for when I am there.
Excellent truck overall. With the V-6, still has great pick-up, however she is a gas guzzler but not very bad. Tank will last you about two weeks to each fill-up and each fill up at empty will cost around $80. With or without the extra features I put on my Sport Trac, this truck is a fun vehicle to drive and I would buy a second one!
I work in the city but go to the country on the weekends. This truck is perfect for that lifestyle. I wish it had a bit more pickup power for the on-ramps though. It is easier to drive than a f-150. I would recommend this truck to anyone.
