What’s New for the 2027 Subaru Getaway

The 2027 Getaway is an all-new, all-electric three-row midsize SUV from Subaru. It joins the compact Solterra and forthcoming subcompact Uncharted as the next logical step in Subaru's electric SUV progression and offers a fossil-fuel-free alternative to the automaker's Ascent three-row SUV. The Getaway likely won't be as capable over rough terrain as some of its Subaru stablemates, but it should still prove plenty competent in rough weather.

Design

The Getaway incorporates a lot of styling cues from the recently refreshed Solterra, with a combination of blocky shapes and sharply faceted bevels in the bodywork. As is the case for many EVs, its front fascia lacks a traditional grille, with a large, flat expanse of painted plastic in its place. Distinctive LED marker lights have a Porsche-like appearance, while the actual headlights are tucked just below.

The side view features angular creases that sweep in and out around the doors, accentuating the flared fenders, while around back, a unique black plastic section wraps around the base of the window. It houses segmented taillights that mimic the front marker lights, with an illuminated Subaru badge in the middle. Angular creases also appear in the liftgate, though that's a common theme for almost all SUVs nowadays.

Overall, the 2027 Getaway looks more futuristic than the typical Subaru, but it still retains some rugged presence. With raised roof rails and lower silver body sections inspired by metal skid plates, the styling seems appropriate for a company that sets itself apart from rivals with its historically strong off-road capabilities.

Powertrain

Initially, the 2027 Subaru Getaway will come with a 95.8-kWh battery pack that feeds two electric motors—one for each axle, delivering all-wheel drive (AWD). Combined, they produce 420 horsepower, which Subaru claims will accelerate the Getaway to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. It's also rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped. In early 2027, a standard-range model will join the lineup, with a smaller 77-kWh battery, less range, and, we presume, a lower price.

Subaru estimates the Getaway will return more than 300 miles of range on a single charge. When you'll need to recharge, it's equipped with a Tesla-derived NACS charge port, with a maximum charge rate of 150 kW. On a DC fast charger, it should replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 30 minutes.

In true Subaru style, the Getaway rides higher than the typical midsize SUV, with 8.3 inches of ground clearance. Off-road versions of the Honda Pilot and Kia Telluride meet or exceed that ride height, though the all-electric Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9 ride at 7.8 and 6.9 inches, respectively. This gives the Getaway a slight advantage in snowy and muddy conditions, but it's not as off-road-capable as Subaru's Wilderness models. We wonder if a Wilderness trim might be possible for the Getaway, but for now, it's best to think of it as a soft-roader that should exceed expectations in inclement weather.

2027 Subaru Getaway Preview - interior

Interior

The 2027 Getaway can accommodate up to seven passengers with its second-row bench seats. There are also captain's chairs available, which reduce seating capacity to six. There's ample space in the second row for taller adults, and the captain's chairs slide and recline to provide more legroom for either the occupants or their fellow passengers behind them. Standard one-touch sliding and folding second-row seats allow for mostly effortless access to the third row.

The third row has enough legroom for adults if the middle-row passengers slide their seats forward just a bit. There's also enough headroom, but the seat cushions are mounted lower to the floor, reducing thigh support. This is very common among all midsize three-row SUVs, though. The sensation of spaciousness is enhanced by an available massive panoramic sunroof that lets plenty of light in.

The cockpit is somewhat traditional, though it has echoes of the faceted bodywork in the dashboard and door panels. Standard features include tri-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and ambient lighting, while options include heated second and third rows, ventilated first and second rows, and a heated steering wheel. In an effort to reduce the Getaway's carbon footprint, its interior surfaces are covered in a synthetic leather instead of genuine hides.

Behind the third row, the Getaway can hold up to 15.9 cubic feet of cargo. Standard power-folding seatbacks expand the volume to 45.6 cubic ft, though they take a few seconds to go through the motions. For smaller personal items, there's plenty of storage up front, with well-sized cupholders, door pockets, and bins.

Technology

Standard tech features include a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and twin wireless charging pads. The displays are well-placed in the driver's sightlines to reduce distraction, but we didn't have the opportunity to dive into the infotainment system to evaluate its intuitiveness and ease of use. The on-screen graphics were sharp and modern, though, and responses were fairly quick.

The Getaway's twin wireless chargers were notable for their synthetic suede surfaces that angle downward from the center. That pitched angle keeps smartphones from sliding side-to-side, and the suede provides a moderately grippy surface, while also looking significantly nicer than the typical charging pad.

Safety

All Getaway models will come standard with Subaru's EyeSight suite of advanced safety features and driver assists. These include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning, traffic-jam assist, lane-change assist, and emergency stop assist. Higher trims will further benefit from frontal cross traffic warning, a semi-automated parking system, and a digital rearview mirror.

Crash-test results are not yet available for the 2027 Getaway as it's brand new, but Subaru has a strong reputation for passenger protection and are expecting top safety scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Pricing and Release Date

The 2027 Subaru Getaway is expected to arrive in dealerships this October. Pricing hasn't yet been announced, but we'd wager it will be competitive against the only other midsize three-row EVs in its class: the Kia EV9 and the Hyundai Ioniq 9. That puts starting prices between $55,000 and $60,000.
