2026 Subaru Uncharted Pricing, Specs, and Release Date

by Clifford Atiyeh

Subaru's third electric car in its growing EV lineup is a subcompact SUV coupe called the Uncharted that goes on sale in early 2026. Based on the new Toyota C-HR, the Uncharted attempts to put Subaru's spin on an entry-level SUV but at a premium price versus its popular gas-powered Crosstrek.

What’s New for the 2026 Subaru Uncharted

Like the Solterra and the Trailseeker, the Uncharted uses a new EV-optimized chassis, powertrain, and technology developed by Toyota. Subaru, as a small automaker with limited financial resources to develop lower-volume cars, has partnered with Toyota since the first BRZ coupe came out in 2012. The Uncharted, in size and price, will compete against small, affordable EVs like the Nissan Leaf, Kia EV4, Hyundai Kona Electric, Chevrolet Equinox EV, and by default, the Toyota C-HR.

Design

Compared to the Solterra, the Uncharted is seven inches shorter and has a sleeker roofline without any handles on the rear door panels. The coupe composure echoes premium EVs like the Audi Q4 Sportback, although the Uncharted is more utilitarian with blunted front and rear fascias and plenty of gray body cladding to protect the paint against chips and scratches. Every Uncharted features Subaru's new lighting signature, which is an attractive set of stacked triple LEDs, and thin taillights that wrap around the fenders. The top GT trim has a contrasting black roof and 20-inch wheels.

Powertrain

Most Uncharted trims will come with dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) good for up to 338 horsepower on the GT. The mid-level Sport will likely be detuned, but not as much as the base Premium, which for the first time on any U.S.-bound Subaru since the 1990s will be front-wheel drive (FWD). That trim, which Subaru says will be built in limited numbers, has 221 horsepower. Sport and GT models come with X-Mode, which optimizes traction on rough surfaces. Torque figures and EPA estimates will be released later. Every Uncharted comes with a 74.7-kWh battery that Subaru claims can drive 290 miles per charge on dual-motor trims and more than 300 miles on the single-motor Premium. A NACS charging port accepts up to 150 kW, which is better than the older Solterra's 100 kW but very low compared to EVs from Hyundai and Kia. The Level 2 charging rate accepts AC power up to 11 kW.

Interior

The Uncharted follows an ordinary interior design with synthetic upholstery, hard plastic, and two displays popping out of the dash. A 14-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two wireless phone chargers, heated front seats, and ambient lighting come standard, as does a small, almost square steering wheel. Unusually, there is no glovebox. The Sport has Subaru's Startex material on the seats, which are soft and water-repellant. The GT has a two-tone gray and black color scheme with an orange accent on the dash, plus standard cooled front seats and a panoramic moonroof.

Technology

The infotainment is straight out of current-generation Toyota models, with only two dials for climate temperature, a volume knob, and two buttons for the front and rear defrosters. The system is generally easy to use and the typefaces are large for legibility, but vehicle customization is limited compared to competitors. Controls for the driving modes are thankfully on the console, which introduces yet another confusing gear selector the driver must adapt into muscle memory. The small instrument panel is carryover from the Solterra, which shows a limited amount of information. The Sport comes with 360-degree cameras, while the GT adds a digital rearview mirror and a Harman/Kardon stereo.

Safety

Subaru EyeSight comes standard with the most updated driver assistance features, though only the GT comes with lane change assist and traffic jam assist. In addition to those active safety features, Subaru has not disclosed passive features such as knee airbags or the structure of the vehicle's body and chassis. As such, there are no crash-test ratings at this time.

Pricing and Release Date

The 2026 Subaru Uncharted will be on sale in early 2026 and we estimate the base price will slot below the 2026 Solterra (at or slightly below $40,000). The exact launch and price will likely be in flux as federal EV tax credits expire September 30, along with more potential U.S. tariffs on Japan and a new federal policy that no longer allows California to demand automakers meet separate, higher fuel economy requirements. This could all impact the Uncharted's debut and nationwide availability.
