Electric vehicles still account for only a small percentage of the overall US vehicle market, but they are becoming more mainstream as time goes on. Tesla was a major early player in the electric vehicle (EV) market, and its Model Y has been one of the best-selling vehicles in the world in recent years. It offers strong acceleration and competitive range numbers that put them at or near the top of their segment.

What’s New for the 2025 Tesla Model Y
Tesla gave the Model Y a complete overhaul for the 2025 model year, which brought revised exterior styling, a new interior with more tech features, and more. At the same time, the automaker still sells the previous generation alongside the updated SUV. It’s worth noting that Tesla doesn’t follow the traditional model year structure that nearly every other automaker adheres to.
Design
While the new Model Y is sharper and more modern-looking than its predecessor, it retains some of the earlier version’s attitude, including the vague egg-shaped body. Despite that, the new vehicle features new lighting elements, wheel designs, and more, though Tesla continues offering only a few paint colors, with most costing extra.
Powertrain
Tesla doesn’t detail powertrain specifications like other automakers, but it does outline the Model Y’s range and acceleration numbers. The Model Y Launch Series offers 327 miles of range, a 125 mph top speed, and a 4.1-second zero-60-mph time.

Interior
The Model Y seats five people across two rows, and synthetic leather upholstery comes standard. Other standard interior features include a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and heated rear outboard seats. Though it lacks the visual pop that many competitors offer, the Model Y’s cabin feels premium throughout. The automaker also combines all vehicle functions into the touchscreen, giving the SUV a super clean look with no clutter anywhere to be seen.
Technology
Tesla equips a 15-inch touchscreen, several USB ports, seven speakers, navigation, wireless charging, automatic climate control, a cabin air-purification system, and more. The automaker does not offer popular features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but its in-house interface is responsive and mostly easy to use. That said, combining all vehicle functions into the touchscreen can make some settings a challenge to find, and the system can be distracting while driving.
Safety
The new Model Y hasn’t received complete crash-testing from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but it earned “Good” scores in the categories where it has scores. Standard features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, traffic-sign recognition, and more.

Pricing and Release Date
As of the time of this writing, the 2025 Tesla Model Y starts at $52,490. That’s before options and does not include the up to $7,500 federal tax credits, for which the vehicle qualifies.
