The BMW M5 has long been heralded as an upscale and muscular midsize performance sedan. In fact, the original 1980 M535i was the car that gave rise to the executive sport sedan as well as to the roadgoing manifestation of the M brand. It competes with other high-powered four-doors, such as the Mercedes-AMG E63 S and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.

What’s New for the 2025 BMW M5
The BMW M5 has been completely redesigned for the 2025 model year, marking the introduction of the seventh generation of the swift saloon. Shockingly, it will introduce a new high-performance plug-in hybrid powertrain. It will also see the US introduction of the M5 Touring, which has been sold in Europe and the UK for decades.
Design
The all-new M5 takes on some of the new BMW design trends that have emerged from some of its SUVs, such as the “chunky” twin-kidney grille and converging angles and lines. Staggered 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels wrapped in performance tires are standard equipment. The M5 is finished off with quad exhaust tips.
Powertrain
The redesigned M5 boasts a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, working with an electric motor for a plug-in hybrid setup that makes a combined 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed to BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive (AWD) through an eight-speed automatic transmission. This combination is good for a zero to 60 mph time of just 3.4 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 155. It can be raised to 190 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package, which includes an instruction session at an M Performance Center.
The EPA measures fuel economy for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) in miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent (MPGe). In this form of testing, the M5 earns 50 MPGe. Contributing to that is an all-electric range of 25 miles.

Interior
The M5 provides seating for up to five passengers. With up to 16.5 cubic feet of trunk space, you can load up for a road trip. The Touring wagon provides even more space for gear. Standard features include four-zone automatic climate control, M sport front seats, a flat-bottom M steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, premium leather upholstery, and a combination of carbon fiber and dark silver trim.
Technology
The 2025 M5 boasts a massive, curved screen that spans the dash, which includes a digital instrument panel and a large touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. It also comes standard with a wireless charging pad, navigation with augmented view, and a Bowers & Wilkins premium stereo system.
Safety
Standard driver-assistance features on the 2025 M5 include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and driver-attention monitoring. Available safety tech includes adaptive cruise control that can stop and go with traffic.
