2024 Toyota GR86 Pricing, Specs, and Release Date

by Chris Teague

The Toyota GR86, formerly known just as the 86, is a rarity in today’s car market. Its rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout and manual transmission make it a unique enthusiast’s car, but until recently, it lacked the power to make it truly exciting. That changed in 2022 with the introduction of the new GR86, and the car remains a compelling performance platform heading into 2024.

What’s New for the 2024 Toyota GR86

After a significant revision two years ago, the GR86 only picks up a special Trueno Edition for 2024. The car remembers the old-school AE86 Corolla from decades ago and brings upgraded Sachs dampers, Brembo brakes, and unique styling. The automaker will only ship 860 units to the United States, though buyers can add the suspension and brakes with an options package for other variants.

Design

The GR86 is a low-slung coupe with an aggressive stance and a wide-mouth grille. Its styling is otherwise quite clean and lacks the wild scoops and wing spoilers seen on some sportier models, including its cousin, the Toyota GR Corolla.

Powertrain

Toyota developed the GR86 in partnership with Subaru, which brought a unique four-cylinder engine from the brand. It makes 228 horsepower and sends it to the rear wheels through a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic. That enthusiast-friendly layout makes the GR86 one of just a few cars available in the configuration, and the added power from the 2022 overhaul finally gives the car the exciting feel it lacked in its prior generation.

Interior

Though it sports a four-seat interior, the GR86 is much friendlier for two passengers. The rear seat is best reserved as a package shelf, but it can be used for short periods when needed. That said, it’s tight enough that even children will feel the pinch on longer trips.

Technology

Toyota equips an 8-inch touchscreen and a 7-inch digital gauge cluster as standard, as well as standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM radio, and six speakers. The optional Premium trim adds two speakers, and all models get selectable drive modes that change the gauge cluster appearance with different information based on the mode.

Safety

The 2024 GR86 picked up standard adaptive cruise control. Other default safety tech features include automatic high beams, a rearview camera, forward collision alerts, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alerts, lane-keep assist, and lead vehicle takeoff alerts. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alerts and rear parking sensors are available. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) did not award a Top Safety Pick for the 2024 model year due to more intense testing standards, but prior model years earned the designation.
