The BRZ is a bit of an oddball in Subaru’s lineup: it’s the only car the automaker currently sells without all-wheel drive, and it shares almost everything underneath with a Toyota. Subaru completely overhauled the car for 2022, and it rolls into 2023 unchanged. The 2023 Subaru BRZ is on sale now. It competes with the Toyota GR86, Volkswagen Golf GTI, Ford Mustang, and the Nissan Z.
The Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86 twins have always been popular with enthusiasts, as they are light, balanced sports cars with great handling. The problem, however, has been that the cars lacked power, which put a damper on the fun. Subaru and Toyota fixed that problem with the redesign for 2022, and the bump in horsepower has made the pair much more engaging to drive.
Subaru offers two configurations for the 2023 BRZ: Premium and Limited. The Premium trim starts at $29,615 and the Limited trim at $32,115. Both variants come with a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual gearbox by default, but Subaru also offers an automatic. The engine produces 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, which is a notable improvement over the previous BRZ and strong enough to propel the car from 0-60 mph in around 5.5 seconds.
In addition to a stronger engine and enthusiast-friendly manual gearbox, Subaru gives the BRZ a load of go-fast goodies to help it handle and deliver a strong driving experience. A Torsen limited-slip differential comes standard, as well as a specially tuned vehicle stability control system with a focused track mode. The car’s tire pressure monitoring system can register two sets of tires, so the owner can easily swap between road and track or summer and winter tires.
The BRZ offers seating for four, though its back seats are best reserved for small kids or used as a package shelf. The car comes with black upholstery and red contrast stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, sport seats, and more. The Limited trim adds leather upholstery and synthetic suede inserts. Though it’s a small car, the BRZ’s cargo area offers enough space to carry an extra set of tires for use at the track.
Standard tech includes an 8-inch touchscreen that runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other features include Bluetooth, a rearview camera, SiriusXM radio, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, and a special programmable gauge next to the tachometer that displays vehicle and performance information. If the BRZ has an automatic transmission, the steering wheel comes equipped with paddle shift switches.
BRZs equipped with an automatic transmission get Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist package. The options group includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure alerts, forward collision warnings, lead vehicle start alerts, and adaptive cruise control. Automatic cars also come with automatic high beams.
