Maybe the alternator was a cheap Pep Boys rebuild? I tried those years ago. I think I went through a whole truck load until I learned my lesson.

Car was losing power as I was driving. The radio went off dash lights and then head lights. I looked under the hood and smelled something. That happened to the first and now the second.

I had lifetime warranty on alternator but also got voltage regulator plug this time and ran a ground from battery to alternator mount. Running ok so far I'll post if it does it again. Thanks
