2015 Infiniti Q70 Overview

It may be a bit frayed around the edges, but the 2015 Infiniti Q70 luxury sedan still offers a viable alternative to, for instance, Bimmer’s 5 Series or Mercedes’ E-Class. The 5-passenger Q70, Infiniti's replacement for the old M series, offers a sharp, albeit update-begging profile; a number of powerplant choices, including a hybrid variation; various desirable bells and whistles and some seriously posh cabin ambiance.

Again this high-end 4-door is available in the traditional 3 engine-delineated trim offerings—the base 3.7, the up-powered and up-featured 5.6 and the green-leaning Q70 Hybrid. Meanwhile, a stretched version of this classy sedan, dubbed the Q70L, has been introduced for the upcoming model year and covered in a separate overview.

As for further changes in 2015, all Q70 trims are expected to feature a few subtle exterior tweaks (reworked grille and headlight bezels, LED taillights), along with some minor mixing and matching of standard and optional equipment. A number of reviewers, meanwhile, say the aging exterior look could use a little more panache.

Once again, all Q70 trims return for 2015 in the standard rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration. As is traditional, however, all except the Hybrid can be driven away packing Infiniti’s available Intelligent All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system that allows normal cruising in economical RWD, while standing ready to automatically divert torque from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip when things turn slippery.

Power-wise, look for the Q70 3.7 variation to again pack a 3.7-liter V6 engine that mates with the standard 7-speed auto-manual transmission for 330 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. Mileage figures remain 18 mpg city/26 highway in the RWD versions of this entry-level trim, with AWD editions running 18/24.

Stepping up to the open hood of the Q70 5.6 trim, you’ll feast your eyes on an impressive 5.6-liter V8 powerplant. Again combining with the 7-speed auto-manual transmission, this potent V8 puts out 420 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque to the tune of 16/24 in RWD variations and 16/23 in AWD trims.

For the fuel-budget-conscious, the 2015 Q70 Hybrid boasts a 3.5-liter gasoline-fired V6 engine mated with a 50-kilowatt electric motor. Look for a total of 360 hp from that combo, with Infiniti touting the V6 as putting out 258 lb-ft of torque and the electric motor some 214 lb-ft of torque. Again, all this power is managed by the 7-speed auto-manual transmission, with regenerative braking, of course, helping the V6 recharge the lithium-ion battery pack. EPA-estimated mileage, by the way, is a rather ho-hum 29/34.

All Q70 iterations will additionally return with Infiniti Drive Mode Selector, whereby drivers can select Standard, Sport, Snow or Eco modes to adjust throttle response and transmission shift points to suit the mood or conditions of the moment. Additionally, all trims get standard hill-start-assist technology.

Boasting a passel of posh, the base 2015 Q70 3.7 is expected to feature 18-inch alloy wheels, a power moonroof and heated, reverse-tilting power-adjustable mirrors outside, with leather upholstery; heated power-adjustable front seats; heated rear seats; genuine wood, alloy and leather accents; and full power accessories adorning the interior. Of course, cruise control and telescoping tilt-wheel steering are standard, as are such goodies as a remote garage door opener, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and a rear-view camera. Additionally, dual-zone auto climate control remains standard in this base trim, as do memory for driver's settings and Bluetooth hands-free calling.

Look for the Q70 5.6, meanwhile, to add a heated steering wheel, a multi-view camera and standard GPS navigation to the above list, while the Q70 Hybrid returns equipped similarly to the 3.7 trim, though it does boast a few of the standard add-ons found in the 5.6 iteration. Oh, and trunk capacity in the non-hybrid variations is 14.9 cubic feet, while the Hybrid trim’s battery pack cuts its luggage-lugging capacity to 11.3 cubic feet.

Entertainment in the entry-level 3.7 includes a 160-watt stereo system with a single-CD player, 6 speakers, satellite radio and auxiliary audio input. Again, all of this, including the Bluetooth, returns interfaced with a 7-inch touchscreen. The Q70 5.6 and the Hybrid each sport a Bose premium system with a 6-CD changer and 10 speakers, as well as standard Infiniti Connect directions and connections services, all integrated with an 8-inch touchscreen display.

Options for the 2015 Q70 editions are almost exclusively in package form and include a Bose premium audio system with 16 Surround Sound speakers, upgraded leather upholstery, upgraded and upsized wheels mounting performance tires, a sport-tuned suspension with beefed-up brakes, sport front seats and a sport steering wheel with paddle shifters.

Finally, standard safety equipment aboard the 2015 Q70 lineup includes 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), front and rear head airbags, front side-mounted airbags and front head restraint whiplash protection. Again for the upcoming model year, front fog/driving lights and high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights return as standard equipment lineup-wide, while a post-collision safety system, Infiniti Connect emergency telematics and a remote antitheft alarm also come standard. On top of all that, an available Technology Package, featuring adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control, front and rear collision warnings, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure alerts and cornering assistance (Trace Control), returns as a safety option for the entire Q70 spectrum.
