I drove it but there was a red light on the engine part and it is not a good sign!

A Great Little Commuter Car. — The base Cooper is a fun little car to drive and gets good gas mileage. I'm very tall, and even with the sun roof there is PLENTY of front seat room in this car. Six speed manual transmission makes the most of the engine. Back seat shouldn't even exist (unless your entire family is under 5' tall). The base Cooper engine is fine for basic transportation -- but should really have a bit more pep in a car at this price level. Controls take some getting used to, but are functional.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: good gas mileage
great front seat room (headroom/legroom)
nice looks
good brakes
fun to drive

Cons: back seat is only good for torture
base engine could use more power
seemed to need a bit more maintenance than "normal"

2009 MINI Cooper Base Review
laloaustin says:
Best driving car Ive ever owned with sport leather seats. Great car until something happens and then the bills pile up. Drove from 33K miles to 104K miles commuting. Very hard to sell with 100% records at dealership with extended warranty. Beautiful but capricious.

Power Ranked 2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring Hardtop Convertible better.
"It is quicker. Mini base had 122HP and Miata has 168HP. Mini Cooper is a 1.6 DOHC, Vanos timing (issues with age), and 11 to 1 compression. That is how they get the HP!"
Handling Ranked 2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring Hardtop Convertible worse.
"No body roll, truly amazingly predictable."
Value Ranked 2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring Hardtop Convertible better.
"Cost of parts, cost of service, and advertisd mechanical predictability. The Mini Cooper will bring lots of surprises, beautiful and sophisticated but cost to run is high. Thermostat $450, water pump $600, 4 wheel align at BMW $195 vs $112 for the Mazda. Electric hard top convertible. Simple design!"
Would Buy Ranked 2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring Hardtop Convertible better.
"Advertised dependability and cost to own and commute."

A Second Car In A Family — The car is small but the space for driver is big. The exterior is good looking and the buttons and interior are well designed. The engine is powerful, reliable. This car is small and I can find it very easy to park.

Pros: easy to park, fashion, beautiful, powerful engine

Cons: small, can't take big furniture

Fun In A Tiny Package — If you want a really enjoyable driving experience in a small, used hatchback in the US, you really only have six choices: the Mazdaspeed 3; the VW GTI; the last gen Suburu WRX and WRX STi or the MINI Cooper "S" and JCW. The Cooper "S" isn't the fastest, but it has that magical combination of "feel" + performance + design that's truly hard to beat. (I have excluded the Ford Focus ST and Fiesta ST, because they are so rare as used cars as of this writing). I drove all of them and ranked them as follows, purely on everyday driveability and that unquantifiable fun factor, as follows: 1. Cooper "S"; 2. GTI; 3. JCW; 4. WRX; 5. Mazdaspeed 3; and 6. WRX STI. Realizing that such rankings are highly personal and subjective, I won't bore you with all the variables that mattered to me, but suffice it to say, I purchased the MINI Cooper "S." I have not regretted the decision for one moment. It really is an amazing little car that rides and handles superbly.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Amazing driving experience from such a small car; tight, tight, tight handling and gobs of power from the little turbo unit to make even the daily commuting grind fun.  The manual transmission is the only way to go.

Cons: Great for two regular-sized humanoids; a squeeze for three; impossible for four.

Not Worth It! — I was so excited to get my mini convertible! It was everything I had been looking for in a car and I really loved everything about it. Then, after a year, the honeymoon was definitely over. Long story short... Mpg plummeted, it breaks down every 3 months and I had to buy the extended warranty to keep up (but there is a deductible every time you bring it in!). In the past two years I have spent over $4000 in repairs and maintenance (with warranty!). It depreciated so much that I owe $10,000 more than the blue book values it at (and I bought it for below blue book!) so I can't unload it. It is still very cute and I get a lot of compliments but I tell people to run. Is a rolling money pit death trap.

Pros: Love the way the car looks and I like go-kart feel

Cons: You feel every bump, breaks down every three months, mpg no where near what was I told, repair costs are huge and depreciates in value rapidly.

Like Driving A Go Cart — I would recommend a Mini Cooper. Our experience has been good and we never get tired of driving it! Its just such a cool little car I never really get tired of looking at it either. In the future as our family grows and moves on I would certainly get another one, but trying to put several teenagers in the car is not real practical for now.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: A blast to drive, good looks, a real attention getter, great MPG, easy maintainence, Did I say a BLAST to drive!

Cons: Harsh ride. No center arm rest.

Love It! — Bigger than it looks inside, handling is fantastic, love the gas mileage- 40mpg+ (highway). Fits in small parking spaces, comfortable on long drives. Visibility is great and I love the fact that the tach is in front of me not hidden someplace. A true driver's car!

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Bigger than it looks inside, handling is fantastic, love the gas mileage- 40mpg+ (highway).  Fits in small parking spaces, comfortable on long drives.

Cons: Needs a little more power but that's what you get for this trim level.

One Hot Mini — We liked everything about it. It's just a cool car and fun to drive. Love to drive it on a cold day with the seat warmers on. We get lots of thumbs up driving around town. Most importantly, my wife LOVES it.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: This was a great mid-life crisis car for my wife.  She loves to drive it fast.  Great city car.  Great mileage.

Cons: Small trunk.

Mini Rules — I would buy another MINI in a moment. Makes driving pleasurable, lots of complements, great value overall. It provides handling not know in an inexpensive compact. Dealer are fairly good -but would recommend local service instead. Spend a few bucks customizing - it's fun.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Best commuter car ever designed

Cons: A little hard to see in traffic – for inattentive drivers
