When One Looks At Old-fashioned American Value, This Ford Five Hundred Is Hard To Beat! — When the average American auto consumer in the market for a reasonably priced American sedan with most of the amenities, this Ford Five Hundred is hard to beat. It's got more room than the Chevy Impala and the Dodge Charger in terms of passenger room and trunk volume. Its build / assembly quality is as good or better than the Chevy or Dodge. It only comes up short in horsepower and poor rear brake design. And to compensate for the lack of horsepower, the fuel economy of the 3.0 L Duratec v-6 is actually a tad better . ( I'm averaging a real world 19 mpg in mostly city driving and use regular unleaded fuel). When you couple that with the Five Hundred's Mazda6-inspired / Volvo safety designed body, it becomes a very hard bargain to beat. Hopefully, Ford will redesign those rear brakes. I know they will install the 3.5 L v-6 beginning in 2008.

Great Looking Car...but..... —

This throttle body, surging, erratic dash gauge light issue has put a damper on an otherwise great car. Fords inability to acknowledge or to take interest in these issues makes one wonder if they would want to buy another Ford product in the future. I have had the throttle body cleaned and that seemed to take care of the problem until lately when the problem returned worse than before. I had the throttle body replaced but unfortunately the problem did not go away. This car for the bulk of the time we have owned it, has been a dependable comfortable car. We have talked about our next Ford vehicles, truck then another sedan, but have changed to now not being able to put enough trust in Ford products to warrant another purchase. 10/2013 - after visiting 2 larger auto repair shops, to no avail fixing the surge, or the dash lights brightening and dimming, I took the car to a much smaller auto shop. Like most people I suppose, I was skeptical because this shop is in a garage detached from the mechanics house. Not positive what the difference is between a smallish shop like this one as opposed to the multi-bay shops, however, I will be hard pressed to not visit the one bay garage in the future. The mechanic, owner of the shop kept the car for three days, replaced the alternator which was erratically charging. The Ford 500 has regained it's former feel on the road. Once again, my wife's trust in the car is where it used to be. Most importantly, from my point of view, I don't have to listen to the seemingly endless complaints a about this problem. Well at least not for the past two weeks. Certainly the car will have future problems. I feel certain I have found a mechanic who will explore all avenues to repair the car to our satisfaction.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Good Looks; great interior room, power is acceptable for a V-6 with the CVT transmission

Cons: This car has an infamous throttle body problem, engine surging, and at times all the dash gauges and lights will become erratic

Descent Car For A Family — Roomy, comfortable, quiet. Dependable, great on gas and overall a good vehicle. Easy to maintain, and good on the highway. Leather, dual climate control and sunroof are just some of the features on this car. Heated seats and a very spacious trunk make this car a true luxury to have.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Roomy Interior, lots of features, smooth ride.

Cons: Lacks Power
