A longer wheelbase and overall length means a bit more legroom and improved stability for the 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Wagon, an all-wheel drive versatile family car that earns four-star crash ratings. New side curtain airbags join the dual front-side ones, along with a new 2.5-liter, 168-hp H4 engine and choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto tran. An overall redesign is still considered bland by many owners. The all-wheel drive comes with a limited slip center differential, 16-inch wheels with all-season tires, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, and daytime running lights.
Unlike the sedan, rear seats do split-fold, and the 2005 Legacy 2.5i Wagon can hold up to 66 cubic feet when the seats are down (the cargo area holds 34 cubic feet normally). A roof rack is optional. Full power features, cruise control, a tachometer, trip computer, CD player, and tilt steering wheel are all standard. A rear spoiler spruces up the outside. Add-ons include foglights and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Legacy 2.5i Wagon gets around 23/30 mpg. Drivers praise the superior handling and cornering, and the AWD winter performance. They wish for better fuel economy and more comfortable seats.

Subaru's most enduring brand is the Legacy, and the 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5i is redesigned this year with a more upscale interior, longer dimensions for more legroom, and a new 2.5-liter, 168-hp H4 engine mated to either a 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic. Side and side curtain airbags for both rows are added to the dual front airbags in the four-passenger sedan. Other features are the signature all-wheel drive and limited slip center differential, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, and daytime running lights.
Rear seats do not fold down in the 2.5i sedan, but a trunk pass-through allows for longer objects that can't fit in the 11 cubic foot trunk. Standard equipment includes power locks, windows, and mirrors, cruise control, a new trip computer, power steering, a CD player, intermittent wipers, and a security system. A rear spoiler can add some exterior flair, and optional safety features include foglights and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The base model of the Legacy sedan gets around 23/30 mpg, which isn't bad, but drivers wish the 2005 Legacy 2.5i did better. Tight handling, small turning radius, and AWD performance always rate high with owners, but they wish the seats were more comfortable, and some want a bit more power.

Features such as heated seats and mirrors, leather upholstery, a power driver's seat, automatic climate control, a sunroof, and leather trim let you know you're riding in the 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited, an all-wheel drive sedan that adds a few inches to its length and wheelbase this year, plus a revamped overall style. Powered by a new 2.5-liter, 168-hp H4 engine and choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic, the 2005 Legacy 2.5i Limited features 4-wheel ABS brakes, dual front and all-row side airbags (new this year), a limited slip center differential, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Upgrading from the base 2.5i, it adds standard foglights, but an auto-dimming rearview mirror is still optional.
Interior equipment includes a full power setup, cruise control, a CD player, intermittent wipers, a security system, and a trip computer. The trunk holds up to 11 cubic feet of cargo and can be reached by a rear seat pass-through, but the seats do not fold down in the 2005 Legacy 2.5i Limited. A rear spoiler can be added to the exterior. A solid and safe ride, tight handling, and a sleek style please owners, along with the heated seats, but they want better than 23/30 mpg and more horsepower.

The more popular version of the Subaru Legacy is its wagon, and the 2005 Legacy 2.5i Limited Wagon combines upscale convenience with versatile functionality. A 34 cubic foot cargo space opens up to 66 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. It comes standard with tie-downs and a cover, but a roof rack is extra. With revised styling and a longer length, the 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited Wagon gets a new 168-hp, 2.5-liter H4 engine. A 5-speed manual is standard and 4-speed automatic optional. 4-wheel ABS brakes, 16-inch alloy wheels, all-wheel drive with a limited slip center differential, and dual front-side and side curtain airbags for each row are included. The Limited also adds standard foglights.
Other upgrades on the 2.5i Limited Wagon include a power driver's seat, heated front seats, leather upholstery, a CD changer, automatic climate control, and a large sunroof. Leather trim, cruise control, intermittent wipers, full power features, a trip computer, and a security system are already standard. The only major options are an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a rear spoiler. Quiet and smooth handling characterize the 2005 Legacy 2.5i Limited Wagon, and owners like the confidence of the all-wheel drive and the large cargo area. Uncomfortable seats and so-so 23/30 fuel economy disappoint.

Sporty power infuses the all-wheel drive 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT, thanks to a turbocharged version of the new 2.5-liter DOHC H4 engine, which now gets 250-hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. A 5-speed manual is standard, and the GT has the option of a 5-speed auto tran as well. Larger 17-inch alloy wheels, 4-wheel ABS brakes, and a limited slip center and rear differential complement the all-wheel drive system. The 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT adds standard foglights and mirrors with turn signals, and this year side curtain airbags are included with the dual front-side airbags.
A trip computer, power features, security system, heated seats and mirrors, automatic climate control, leather trim, intermittent wipers, and a CD changer are all standard. A longer wheelbase means a bit more legroom, though the backseat still suffers a bit. The trunk holds up to 11 cubic feet of cargo, and the powerful sedan can tow up to 2700 pounds. A rear spoiler and auto-dimming rearview mirror can be added. Owners of the 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT sedan like the power, handling, and AWD feature, but are disappointed by the 19/25 mpg and need for premium gas and the uncomfortable seats.

A new turbocharged 2.5-liter DOHC flat four with 250 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque sits inside the restyled and lengthened 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Wagon, making it capable of hauling up to 2,700 pounds. The wagon also offers up to 66 cubic feet of interior storage room when the rear seats are folded down. The all-wheel drive wagon seats four comfortably and features a fully independent suspension, limited-slip rear and center differentials, larger 17-inch wheels with all-season tires, 4-wheel ABS brakes, standard foglights and daytime running lights, and mirrors with turn signals. Dual front-side airbags and new all-row side curtain airbags are standard.
Aside from cupholders and a storage console, the 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT Wagon upgrades from the 2.5i by offering a CD changer, heated front seats and mirrors, automatic climate control, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. Other equipment includes a full power setup, cruise control, intermittent wipers, a trip computer, a security system, and a rear spoiler. A roof rack and cargo nets are extra, but the cargo area does come with tie-downs and a cover. An auto-dimming rearview mirror is also optional. Great acceleration and speed, a lot of fun to drive, tight handling, and the all-wheel drive solidity earn praise from drivers. Downsides include the 19/25 mpg.

The 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Limited is a luxurious step up from the regular GT. The all-wheel-drive sedan features the same turbocharged 2.5-liter DOHC flat four that hits 250 hp and the same choice of five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, but it adds such comforts as leather seats, power front seats, and a sunroof. The energetic compact gets only 19/25 mpg, but owners feel safe in it, thanks to four-wheel ABS brakes, a limited-slip rear and center differential, foglights, daytime running lights, and dual front-side and new side curtain airbags. The 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT also features mirrors with turn signals.
Power windows, locks, and mirrors, heated mirrors, intermittent wipers, a trip computer, tachometer, anti-theft system, and leather trim are also included. Rear seats do not fold down, but the trunk holds around 11 cubic feet of room. An auto-dimming rearview mirror and rear spoiler are optional. Drivers of the 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT Limited love its power and acceleration and the all-wheel drive, but hate that it needs premium gas. They also wish it had a few more features, such as memory settings. Seats can feel a bit uncomfortable.

The topline offering of the all-wheel drive wagon is the 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Limited, featuring a new turbocharged 2.5-liter DOHC H4 that hits 250-hp and comes with a choice of 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. With such upgrades from the regular GT as heated leather seats, power front seats, automatic climate control, and a power sunroof, the 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT Limited Wagon is packed with bells and whistles. Power features, heated mirrors, cruise control, leather trim, a CD changer, intermittent wipers, and a trip computer round out the package.
A longer wheelbase means a bit more legroom (though it still feels cramped in the backseat), and the wagon offers split-folding rear seats to expand the cargo area from 34 to 66 cubic feet. A cargo cover and tie-downs are standard, but a roof rack is extra. The all-wheel drive comes with limited slip rear and center differentials, an independent suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, 4-wheel ABS brakes, foglights, mirrors with turn signals, and dual front-side and side curtain airbags. An auto-dimming rearview mirror and rear spoiler are the main options. The biggest complaints seem to center on the lack of a rear armrest and such features as a navigation system. Gas mileage and premium fuel are other downsides. But drivers love the speed and power of the turbo, and the AWD grips the road confidently.
