The Navigator Ultimate 4WD truly combined a saturated standard-equipment list with off-road and poor-weather capability, resulting in a full-sized SUV deserving of the Ultimate moniker. With comforts as unique as power-deployable running boards, it pleased those seeking the pinnacle of poshness in an American product.
With four drive modes and a two-speed transfer case, the Control Trac 4WD system let the driver choose from 2 High, 4 High, or 4 Low, or to let the automatic mode determine the ideal setting. Active, outdoors-oriented buyers loved this comfortable and capable rig, which could tow up to 8,300 pounds - more than sufficient for the average boat or camper.
It proved to be just as useful for everyday activities such as shopping, especially with the power liftgate, which could be opened with the press of a button upon approach. Another Ultimate standard feature, the power-folding third-row bench seat, also required just a button-push to make room for all those parcels - unless, of course, there were seven passengers needing seats.
Heated and cooled front seats and a power sunroof were the other items included with the upgrade to the Ultimate trim. A navigation system (voice-activated), DVD entertainment system, chrome wheels, and a deluxe audio system were available as options.
