2003 Buick Regal Preview summaryImage

2003 was a year for downsizing in the Buick Regal. Not in dimensions or trunk capacity (16.7 cubic feet) or engine power (a 3.8-liter, V6), but in standard equipment, most notably in the base LS model. The 2003 Regal is a mid-size sedan that shares its style and platform with the Century, but offers better performance and a sportier suspension in an attempt to woo younger buyers.

This year, some safety features that were standard on the LS, such as ABS brakes and traction control, are now optional. They are still offered with the GS. Heated mirrors are now only optional on the GS. And the handy split-folding rear seats will now cost you extra. Does the 2003 Regal make up for this with anything new? It does get a better starter and bundles options together in more packages, a new Luxury package and a Leather and Wheel package, which adds leather seats, the split-fold, and 15-inch aluminum wheels to the LS. A 195-hp V6 powers the base LS, while the supercharged GS hits 240-hp, both with a 4-speed automatic. The GS comes standard with 16-inch wheels, a stiffer suspension, and rear stabilizer bar, which is optional on the LS as the Gran Touring package.

The 2003 Regal is a good domestic alternative to the more popular foreign mid-size sedans, and owners like the still long list of features (power driver's seat, cruise, keyless entry) even in the base model. They also feel the engine is reliable and durable, with good 20/30 gas mileage. Handling is a breeze, and the GS acceleration power hints at street racer potential. Downsides include some dash rattles, an outdated interior (especially the faux wood trim), wind noise, and cupholders that get in the way of the shifter.

This is the Camry of North American cars. Just a size bigger and little bit less fuel efficient. This car is the most reliable of the Buick line and Buick is the most reliable brand from the North American's. The engine is responsive and better for highways; fuel economy is average for a car of this size. 26 Mpg with a highway-focused tempo. The steering wheel feels light but the windows allow for much visibility. Interior space is generous and sound-proofing is just above above average. Suspension is soft (too soft). I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a good full-size, reliable and affordable, sedan.Sep 08, 2009

Performance is lively in every respect. The drivetrain is as close to bullet proof as they come. Build quality is quite good. The exterior is on the "classy bland" side, interior is relatively well laid out and executed, with the exception of lack of interior storage space. Buick just ignores this issue on most models. Cost of ownership is reasonable, except for the heavy footed driver. This model leads all other Buick models in fun factor. If you have to have a sporty Buick, this is the one!Feb 12, 2009
