Buy One If You Can Work On It Yourself — Fantastic brakes, wonderful performance, quiet and smooth on the road at all speeds, good build quality and great looking car. Don't like drive-by-wire throttle. I bought this car with 80,000 miles and have performed some fairly standard preventative maintenance on it but have had no mechanical problems with the car whatsoever.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: The overall feel of quality and solidity

Cons: Dealer maintenance and repair cost.

Awesome. — Tail happy, fast and comfortable, but still practical enough to carry golf clubs and luggage with room for three adults. Brakes could be better and that V6 needs to be louder, but nothing that an induction kit can't sort out!

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Fast and practical.

Cons: Not special enough to look at.

Amazing Car!! — I need to do a bunch of performance work to make it a bit quicker. as well change the ground effects pkg and touch up the alpine white paint. It is expensive to own but worth it, and it's a blast to drive!

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: handling and the ride

Cons: expensive gas

Loved It — Absolutely battered escort RS's with quick throttle response, a quality gearbox that got nearly ALL the power strainght to the rear wheels and it wasn't too heavy. Gotta love that rear wheel drive arse out drift action!! Quality! Get one!

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: Beemer-nuff said

Cons: Skittish in the wet

A Good Young-family Car For The Dad (was That Prejudiced? The Mom Likes Back Doors In My Family). —

I got this car because it was the sportiest car with back seats somewhat in my price range in 2001 (I put two Eddie Bauer black leather car seats in the back for the kids - they matched the factory leatehr perfectly and looked pretty cool). Overall, I liked the ownership experience, but I'm not positive I'd buy another given the chance. Maybe an M3, but the price differential was significant. The performance was good for a family car. I had the stick which helped. And the bigger engine (3.0l vs. 2.5l but not the M3 engine) which I would recommend. I also had the sport pack, which was supposed to have a little tighter suspension. The steering was modified after the '01 model becaues the '01 version was a little vague for a performance-oriented car. The overall quality was pretty good, and the ownership experience was decent - at least while you are in the warranty period (which I blew through pretty quickly mileage-wise). You go in for service and your car comes out nice and clean and you feel like "wow, I'm this slick BMW-owner" until your first out-of-warranty service when it comes back filthy and you think "wow, I'm crap when the manufacturer is not reimbursing the dealer for detailing." I liked the looks, at least from the rear. For some reason, I thought the E30 looked better than the E36 (this was an E46, but an evolution of that earlier change). Mine was black, which seems to be the only color I am able to order a car in despite flirting with flashier colors. I never tracked it, but if I had it again, I would. In fact, I kind of wish I still had it as it would be about time to rip out the interior and put in a roll cage.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: If you want some performance, decent looks, and a back seat.

Cons: Since these are all used cars at this point, I'll advice you not to buy one because they're cheap unless you plan to keep up the maintenance, which may not be.

Still Haven't Seen Anything That Makes Me Regret My Decision. —

This car is hands down one of the best cars on the road today. It's not the fastest but it sure puts a smile on my face. What alot of people think is the faster the car the better. I wouldn't dare going against a g35 or mustang at a red light but as a overall package the e46 bmw out performs them both. The car is heavy, you dont't feel like you can flip it into a ditch at highspeeds around coners. The stock exaust is just loud enough to give the perfect balance between performance and luxury. Not annoying like a g35 (all the time) or raspy like a v6 mustang. However, I've never had a issue getting on and off the freeway or showing some nosiy honda who the real boss is. The build quality is outstanding. The doors are nice and heavy and it takes some muscle to open and close them. Its not a tin can that will blow away with the wind like a scion tc. I personally think this is one of the best looking cars on the road (non-bais). If you really concentrate on the design it's fairly simple. No dramatic lines or sharp angles, but it has a dominmance that alot of car makers still haven't been able to capture today (ex:) Audi A4, Saab 9-3, Acura TSX, and the pervious Mercedes C-class. The interior like the exterior is also simple. All the buttons are needed and well laid out. When you throw a bunch of buttons and gagets in a car (Acura) all it does is speed up the aging process and lower the vaule at resale time. Less is always more. After a 3 hour drive the standard seats become a pain, but the sport seats are not love handle friendly. The ride is something that will get you into trouble. I highly recommend putting a crack in your window or sunroof. It took me 3 tickets and a defensive driving course to learn. The factory rims and tires provide a smooth and firm ride. If you change them like me. You will become familiar with potholes, the engine and powertain will be your only source of smoothness. Now this is a BMW not a KIA, so trips to shop are not fun. Learn to do little things like change the break pads, change the oil, etc. But if you have a quailty mechanic in your local area it shouldn't bring on such a drought. I highly recomend staying away from the dealer as much as possible because it seems the $120.00 an hour labor rate comes every 15 mins. Out of the 10 years this car was awarded gas mileage was sadly never one of it's attruibutes. The sticker says city 18 but expect around 15 if your heavy footed. Highway you should get about 25 mpg. Bottom line. If you are a real car enthusitst (sp) and appericate a well designed automobile you will not be disappointed. If you want a cool sound and a low zero to 60 time get an infinity.

Pros: The attention, the ride, the quality, the experience.

Cons: Maintenance

Bmw 318i Se (e46) — I do love this car and it has decided the future of the cars that I will buy! I cannot see myself driving anything other than BMW's now. However I wish that it had a 3.2 staright six turbocharged engine under the bonnet like the M3, which by the way is next on my list!

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: BMW's truly are the ultimate driving machine!

Cons: Needs a much bigger engine!!!!!
