The Best Of The Best — BEAUTIFUL! One of the best cars I have ever been in. The leather was beautiful. The dash, shifter, the engine, the trunk space. I mean, what is there not to like about it? The car is the Passat of the century. Better than today's, and yesteryear's VW PASSATS. I highly recommend it.

Pros: Everything

Cons: Nothing

Excellent Road Manners And Gas Mileage. But Required Quite A Bit Of Expensive Maintenance. — When I bought the car, it was the first of the B5 platform. It had excellent driving reviews. I considered this versus the Honda Accord Coupe. I went for the VW because it was so mujch cooler looking. Since this was my first car purchase, I pretty much got it for the looks I walked into the dealership and bought the floor model. It is Colorado Red with tan leather and I also got the 5 disc changer. It's a 5 speed manual 1.8L Turbo because I always wanted to drive stick. I babied the car. Hand waxed it twice a year. And hand washed it frequently. It lived in NJ, PA, MO, and now resides in CA. I still drive the car and have been attempting to do my own maintenance which has saved me some money. But overall, it has cost me a lot to repair since most garages in Bakersfield do not service the car with confidence so I take it to the dealership. It has 145000 miles on it. I am probably going to drive this car to its death.

Pros: It has served me well. Still looks beautiful and drives smooth.

Cons: Expensive to maintain.

Second Car — I got my VW to get a break on rising gas prices. When the transmission started to go out at 100K, we took it in to the shop and found out the car was falling apart beneath me.

Pros: Great gas mileage, Drove good, Enough power without being too weak.

Cons: If one thing goes wrong, you better have warranty.

Built To Last.. — My best car I've ever owned.. Prob most sensible, no bucket seats and not stripped out, but still best by a mile.

Pros: Fuel economy, build quality, performance and looks..

Cons: Costly complicated front suspension when it goes wrong. And that's it really.

Entertaining Car — Solid car with uninspiring but simple good looks. Love the engine and trans and the general usability. Handling is adequate and predictable if not sports cad like

Pros: Fantastic engine

Cons: Cheap window mechanisms

It Was "love" At First Sight At The Dealer, If One Can Love A Vehicle. — It has been a great vehicle for long road trips. But, I am at a decision-point with the Passat having 287,000 miles on it and a newly cracked and leaking radiator with a front end package of $1,700 to 2,000 - the repair cost being more than book value I would think. And how much more "life" would be left in a vehicle that has had very regular and thorough car by very good independent garages? My household has three vehicles and the Passat is the extra more or less, but owned solely by me. UPDATE: I found Lou's garage on the Boonsboro Road just outside of Lynchburg, VA and he and his crew did the work on replacing the cracked radiator, water pump (probable cause) and some other items for about $1100. The car runs fine and on one trip it got up to 37 MPG. I am very happy I found Lou's garage and I did not have to make the car donation!

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: The 1998 VW Passat GLS, 5-speed standard, has been a very good vehicle in terms of its appearance, performance, gas mileage, and the truck with drop down back seats give some good capacity.

Cons: As what seems to be typical for German car, there are "electrical gremlins that seem to inhabit the car with some back door locks behaving oddly and one of the back seat windows also in this camp.

It's Worth It. — A cheap car that drives like a very expensive one. Reasonable performance, suprising economy and superb comfort. No rust or blemishes, paint quality is very very good. You would not believe this a 100k miles car. My best Ebay purchase ever.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Build quality and reliability

Cons: Major services and engine repairs are expensive

Spacious Dog Freighter — A nice car. Reasonable comfortable, good handling, spacious. The 125 hp 1,8 without turbo is a bit of a bore though. Noisy, no spunk and a pretty heavy drinker. If you decide to buy one you should make sure that the links in the front chassi has been replaced with better stuff than the original ones. If you don't chances are that they will cause you a great deal of grief.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Space, looks pretty good, nice interior

Cons: Weak linkage in and around the front suspension
